Gary Neil Koontz, age 70, died Thursday, December, 15, 2016 at his home in Shelby. He was born September 6, 1946 the son of the late Lester Wayne and Mabel Claire Griffin Koontz. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Inez Classen Koontz. Gary proudly served the U.S. Navy, a veteran of The Vietnam Conflict he advanced in rank and after 23 years of service retired as Command Master Chief of the Amphibious School. After his retirement, he went on to work for Dresser Industries where he travelled extensively providing installation and service of steam turbines around the world. Gary was an avid fisherman who greatly enjoyed deep sea fishing, and could, in his leisure times, often be found reading a favorite Louis L'amour or John Grisham novel.

He is survived by his two daughters; Debbie (JP) Forehand of Virginia Beach, VA and Yvonne Koontz of Shelby as well as three grandchildren; Sean Forehand, Emily (Cameron) Harihan and Jennifer Forehand.

A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
