Gary Phillips
Gary Phillips, age 69, of Six Points, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Hospice House of Rutherford County.
Born on Thursday, December 12, 1946 in Rutherford County, he was a son to the late Thomas Paul Phillips and Myrtle Goode Phillips. Gary was a graduate of Crest High School, class of 1965, Appalachian State, class of 1970 and Converse College, class of 1976. Mr. Phillips was a dedicated teacher and coach for the Rutherford County Public Schools for 30 years before his retirement, teaching at Tri-Community School for ten years and Chase High School for twenty years. Gary was also a faithful member of Race Path Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, moderator, and on the cemetery and the budget and finance committees. He enjoyed playing softball, basketball, and coaching Upward Basketball. Gary especially loved spending time with his grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Phillips and Jeff Phillips and grandparents, Clarence and Nora Goode.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty years, Mary McDaniel Phillips; daughter, Sandy Clatanoff and husband, Weston of Mooresboro; grandson, Chase Clatanoff; one brother, Steve Phillips and sister, Peggy Branch and husband, Jr. all of Mooresboro; sister-in-law, Barbara Phillips also of Mooresboro and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Race Path Baptist Church with Reverend Randall Cooper and Reverend John Godfrey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
