| Gaynelle “Granny” Hoppes VanDyke, 83, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011 at Hospice Cleveland County. She was a native of Franklin County, NC and the daughter of the late Melvin Durham and Addie Odum Hoppes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray VanDyke and her sister Mildred Hoppes Bridges. Mrs. VanDyke was a member of Zion Baptist Church. She was an avid reader which inspired her family and friends to read. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt to many and an inspiration to all.
Mrs. VanDyke is survived by two daughters, Lynn VanDyke Gillespie and husband Dwight, Rachel VanDyke Hendrick and husband Boyd all of Shelby; a brother, Nathan “Buck” Hoppes and wife Sis of Southport, NC; two sister-in-laws, Polly V. McWhirter and pat V. Morgan both of Shelby; grandchildren, Sherman Gillespie and wife Candy of Garner, NC, Chris Gillespie and wife Melinda of Waco, and Dr. David Hendrick and wife Laney of Boiling Springs; great-grandchildren, Simone, Anna, Carson and Josh Gillespie, Jessica Whitaker, Tyler Philbeck, and Adam and Jackson Hendrick; and numerous nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Hazel Wilson, her friend and caregiver.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00pm on Monday, October 24, 2011 at Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Katherine Spangler will be officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00pm prior to the service in the church sanctuary. At other times the family will be at the home of Lynn and Dwight Gillespie.
