Gene Branton
Gene Branton, 85 of Shelby, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 2, 2012. A Shelby native, he was preceded in death by his parents, Worth and Louise McMurry Branton, sisters, Betty Depriest and Carolyn Branton.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean Moss Branton, three children, Doug Branton and wife Ginger, Vic Branton and wife Kathie, and Gail Branton Rose and husband Trip. He had three grandchildren, April Branton, Andrea Branton and Michael Branton, and three great grandchildren.

A navy veteran, he earned an associate degree in commercial art from Richmond Polytechnical Institute and a bachelor degree in history from Limestone College. Also he attended Appalachian State University and Gardner Webb.

He was the owner of Branton Construction Company, a building firm with the roots going back to the 20th century.  He loved Shelby, his family and his church. He also loved playing tennis, and was good at it.  At one time he had been a skilled photographer.  He designed and drew house plans along with his other talents.  He was recognized by the Kiwanis Club for 53 years of perfect attendance, an honor which he took great pride in.  Anyone who knew Gene remembers his wry sense of humor.  A quality he demonstrated daily, brightening the lives of those around him.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, April 5, 2012 in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church.  The Rev. Tony Tench will be officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the ladies parlor at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Cleveland County – Wendover facility, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC, 28150.

Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Mr. Branton.
