George Alexander Wheeler, Jr
George Alexander Wheeler, Jr., 96, 855 Hickory Grove Road, Gaffney, SC, died September 12, 2015, at his home. He was born in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Dr. George A. Wheeler and Agnes Kullgren Wheeler. He was a 1941 graduate of Clemson College and a member of Mesopotamia United Methodist Church. He was a WW II Veteran, assigned to the 1955 Quartermaster Company Truck and received the French Legion Of Honor for his military service in France.
He was owner of Wheeler Plumbing & Electric, a cattle farmer, a timber farmer, an expert tomato farmer, and a beekeeper. Mr. Wheeler was instrumental in starting rural fire service in Cherokee County and was a charter member of Twin Rivers Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of various organizations in Cherokee County and a good friend and advisor to many.
The widower of Joan S. Wheeler, he is survived by son, David A. Wheeler and wife, Robin Alexander, of Gaffney, daughter, Jan Whelchel and husband, Wendell, of Gaffney, daughter Mary Lois Wheeler, of Union, granddaughter Julie Phillips and great-granddaughter Eliza Webster both of Gaffney. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by one son, Tom Wheeler, son-in-law, Ralph Thompson, and sister, Charlotte Wheeler.
A Memorial Service will be held, Thursday, September 17, 2015, 4:00 PM, at Mesopotamia United Methodist Church, with Revs. Angelia Price and Toby Pope officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
