George Stephen "Steve" McWhirter, 60, of 816 Johnny Bridges Rd. died
September 19, 2011 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1951 in Cleveland County, he was the son of Frances Pauline
VanDyke McWhirter of Shelby and the late George Ray McWhirter. He worked for
Drexel and Bernardt in the upholstery department. He attended Sandy Run
Baptist Church and was a third degree brown belt in karate. He loved the
beach, hiking, drag racing, working with wood, action movies, and playing
with his grandson.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law,
Joseph Osnie Peeler, and a brother-in-law, Steven Luckadoo.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of thirty nine years,
Shirley Ann Peeler McWhirter, two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark & Crystal
McWhirter of Shelby, Jeff & Caron McWhirter of Mooresboro, grandson, Mark
Lucas McWhirter, mother-in-law, Mary Margaret Peeler of Lawndale,
brothers-in-law, Don Peeler & wife Sue of Lawndale, Bobby Peeler & wife
Betty of Ellenboro, Hugh Lee Peeler and wife Jean of Shelby, Steve Peeler
and wife Barbara of Polkville, sisters-in-law, Dreama Luckadoo of Casar, and
Kathy & JR Davis of Lawndale.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:30 until 8:00PM at Stamey Funeral Home
in Fallston.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 2:00PM at Sandy Run Baptist Church
with the Revs. Don Allen & Doug Pruett officiating. The body will be placed
in the church thirty minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
