Grace Doster Blanton, age 97, of Shelby, NC died on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Hospice Cleveland County.  Prior to entering Hospice she had been a resident of White Oak Manor where she moved after declining health.

A native of Jackson County, Georgia, Grace was the daughter of the late Ernest C. and Ada Moore Doster.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edward Blanton, and her sisters, Gladys and Gertrude Doster.

Mrs. Blanton is survived by a daughter, Angela B. Hertzberg and her husband, Lawrence J. Hertzberg of Raleigh, NC; grandsons. John R. Jolly, III, wife Renee, and sons Carson and Reid and Chris E. Jolly, wife Kathy, and son Smith, all of Wake Forest, NC.  She is also survived by a large extended family who knew that they were considered family – especially her girls who helped to keep her young.

Mrs. Blanton was a member of Union Baptist Church where she had served in numerous positions during her more than 85 years of membership.  She was very proud to be the oldest member of that congregation.

She was retired from the Cleveland County Department of Social Services.

Mrs. Blanton was a great lover of nature.  She especially loved the farm life she enjoyed with her husband until his death in 1995.  They were known for sharing the bounty of their gardens with family, friends and those in need.  Gardening was an important part of both their lives.  Sharing plants and flowers, especially their roses, gave them great pleasure.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory at 106 Cherryville Road in Shelby.  The family will receive visitors immediately following the service at the funeral home.

A private burial will be held sometime prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers Mrs. Blanton requested that donations be made to the Union Baptist Church Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, 3800 Polkville Road, Shelby, NC 28150 or to Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

The family wishes to thank the following: the staff at White Oak Manor of Shelby; the nurses and staff of 4th Floor West at Cleveland Memorial Hospital; Pallative care Physician, Dr. Sangnya Patel; the staff at Hospice Cleveland County; Mrs. Blanton’s pastor, Rev. Michael Shumate and the remarkable group of friends who reached out to love and support her as she transitioned from this life to the next.
