Grace Helena Elmore King

Mrs. Grace Helena Elmore King, 94, formerly of  118 Henry Street in Lawndale, NC was born on February 1, 1919 in Cleveland County, North Carolina.  She was the daughter of the late Thomas Stroud and Mary Byrd.  She departed this life on Friday, August 16, 2013 at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

 

Grace graduated from Douglas High School in Lawndale, North Carolina and was the valedictorian for her class.  After graduation, she attended and graduated from Deshazer Beauty College in Durham, North Carolina with a degree in Cosmetology.  She worked hard for several years as a hair stylist and later opened her own business where she continued to work until her retirement, returning home to take care of her family. 

 

Grace was a lifelong member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir, a member of the United Methodist Women and participated in other services for the church.

 

Grace received a distinguished and meritorious award from the Lawndale Democratic Precinct for outstanding performance on April 17, 2014. She was a charter member of the Douglas High School reunion committee and was a volunteer for the Upper Cleveland County Girl Scouts.  In addition she was a former member of the Elks Club of Shelby, North Carolina and served as a substitute teacher for many years at Douglas High School.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tomie Lee King; a sister, Pauline Randolph (Frederick); four brothers, Theodore Randolph, T.S. Elmore, James Byrd and Jerry Byrd.

 

She is survived by a son, James L. King, Sr. (Bronda) of Shelby, North Carolina; a sister, Willie Lee Kee (Charles) of Lawndale; four grandsons, Gerod W. King (Kathy) of Weddington, North Carolina; Perry L. King (Fredia) of Kings Mountain, James L. King, Jr. (Laurie) of Lawndale and Julius L. King of Charlotte, North Carolina; six great-grandchildren; a special niece whom she helped rear, Monica Hector (Alvis) of Lawndale and a host of other nieces nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Philadelphia United Methodist Church with Pastor Aldana Allen officiating.  Burial will take place at the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM at the church and at other times at the home of her son, James King, 1311 Moonshadow Lane, Shelby.  Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloes.net.  Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
