Grady Flay Walker

Grady Flay Walker, age 88, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 12, 2015. Born in Union, SC on April 14, 1926 he was the son of the late Grady Webb Walker and Cordie Davis Walker. He was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. He served in the Navy during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. After the war, he reenlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served three years of occupation duty in Japan. He retired in 1988 from Container Corporation of America in Shelby and enjoyed several years in retirement as the owner of "Walker's Corner". He spent his final years at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby working puzzles, cooking, dancing and singing Japanese songs. He loved spending time with his wife and family. In addition to his parents, Grady was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Ella Williams Walker and siblings, Thelma Fisher and Dorothy Sanders, Jack Walker and Jennings Walker.

Grady is survived by his wife of 17 years, Betty Rogers Walker; three sons, Michael Walker and wife Regina of Charlestown, WV, Bobby Walker and wife Dawn of Shelby, Thomas Walker and wife Carrie of Bremerton, WA; two daughters, Marie Walker of Shelby and Debra Surretsky and husband Larry of Kings Mountain; two step-sons, Rusty Rogers and David Rogers of Shelby; one step-daughter, Beth Rogers of Shelby, eight grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild. Grady is also survived by two brothers, Jerry Walker and wife Marci of Forest City and Walter Walker of Bostic; three sisters, Sue Jenkins and husband Bobby of Ellenboro, Aloyse Jones and husband Oscar of Bostic, and Leila Absher of Chesnee, SC.


The family will be receiving friends from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Landmark Baptist Church on Friday, January 16, 2015 with funeral services immediately following at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Allen Davis and Rev. Mark Patchett will be officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Cleveland Memorial Park.


In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Life Enrichment Center, 110 Life Enrichment Blvd, Shelby NC 28150.
