Harvey Leon Guffey, 71, passed away on Monday, December 08, 2014 at his home in Ellenboro, NC. He was born February 25, 1943 in Greensboro, NC to RJ and Elsie Crumn Guffey.  He graduated from Rankin High School in Greensboro, NC in 1960, and married Rebecca Lee “Becky” Oakes in 1961.  They moved to Ellenboro, NC in 1968, and have been happily married for almost 54 years.  Harvey was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, the Rutherford County Cattlemen’s Association, and a charter member of the Hopewell-Hollis Ruritan Club. He retired as a Captain with the North Carolina Department of Corrections at the Western Youth Institute in Morganton, NC in 2000, and was an accomplished cattle and produce farmer in Rutherford County, NC for nearly 50 years.  He achieved various accomplishments and received numerous awards from the NC Department of Corrections, the Rutherford County Cattlemen’s Association, the Rutherford Soil and Water Conservation District and the Ellenboro Volunteer Fire Department.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marilyn Jarrett, and Marilyn’s husband, Jerry.   He is survived by his wife Becky of Ellenboro, NC; his daughter, Tina Collis (husband Wayne) of Gordonsville, VA; his son, Harvey, Jr. (wife Wanda) of Ellenboro NC, and his daughter, Tonya Bailey (husband Roger) of Ellenboro, NC; his brother Kenneth (wife Dixie) of Burlington, NC; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 9 nieces and nephews, and countless other relatives and close friends.

A visitation will be held at McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service 4076 U.S. Highway 221-A, Cliffside, NC from 7:00pm-9:00pm on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. A memorial service will be held at Forest City Four Square Church, 121 Mitchell St, Forest City, NC at 10:00am on Thursday,  December 11, 2014. Burial will follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043 and/or Ellenboro Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 188, Ellenboro NC, 28040.
