Henry Woodrow Dameron

Henry Woodrow Dameron, 93, of Kings Mountain, N.C., passed away peacefully Monday, August 5, 2013.

            Henry was born May 28, 1920 in Gaston County, N.C. and was the son of the late Ira Craig Dameron and Lelia Watts Dameron. He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife Ruth Frances Coon Dameron, as well as by three sisters: Eva Wilson, Ruth Ramsey, and Leona Dameron and five brothers: Wayne Dameron, Fred Dameron, Lewis Dameron, Ernest Dameron, and Hill Dameron.

            Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, David Wayne and Mary Anne Dameron of Valdese, N.C. and his two grandsons and their wives, Jonathan Craig and Merry Leigh Dameron of Valdese, N.C. and Matthew Ryan and Lisa Dameron of Roanoke, Virginia, and a great-granddaughter, Zoe Adair Dameron of Valdese, N.C. He is survived by one brother, Harry Dameron, of Virginia.

            Well known throughout Cleveland County, Henry was the “farmer’s friend.” He graduated from N.C. State University and began working in Cleveland County for the Extension Service in 1944. He worked with youth in 4-H for over 22 years and was the County Extension Chairman for 13 years. Henry was well known for his work with the Cleveland County Fair as well, serving as Manager of the Exhibit Hall and editor of the Premium Book. The Anniversary Edition in 1977 honored him for his work and over 60 years of service to the fair.

            In addition, Henry was an active member of the Shelby Rotary Club, receiving the Award of Truth, as well as a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Shelby. A 4-H endowment/scholarship established through N.C. State University exists in Henry’s honor.

            A graveside service celebrating Henry’s well-lived life of service to others will be held Sunday, August 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery in Bessemer City, N.C.

            The family expresses their appreciation to the staff of Carillon Assisted Living of Shelby and to Hospice of Cleveland County for the loving and excellent care provided for Henry and Ruth Dameron during their time of need.
