Herbert Jaynes, age 96, died Friday, September 23, 2016 at his home. Born in McDowell County on September 3, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Annie Browning Jaynes. Herbert attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Shelby.
He was a Staff Sergeant, during WWII in the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he served with the Squadron Detachment 30thBomber Group as an airplane mechanic. Herbert worked as a machine operator in textiles. Herbert was an outdoorsman and enjoyed working in the garden, hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, Herbert is preceded in death by a son, Paul Jaynes.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Clontz Jaynes; two sons, Gary Jaynes and wife Pat of Mr. Juliet TN. and Dennis Jaynes and wife LeeAnn of Shelby; five grandchildren, Michael Jaynes and wife Terri, Brandon Jaynes, Taylor Jaynes, Blair Jaynes, and Ryan Jaynes; and two great grandchildren, Libby Jaynes and Brady Jaynes.
Graveside service, with Military Honors, will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory an hour before the service from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.
