Mr. Hix Gettys, age 95 of 213 Pleasant Ridge Church Road, Shelby, NC, passed away August 13, 2014 at Wendover Hospice.  A native of Sunshine, NC, he was born on February 2, 1919.  He was the son of James Horace and Malissie Allen Gettys.  Mr. Gettys was retired from J.P. Stevens and Company Cloth Mill in Shelby where he worked for 40 years as a supervisor.  He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where he joined in 1946 and served for a number of years and he was also a member of the choir.  He helped to build two churches at Pleasant Ridge, the one that burned in 1957 and the current building.  Mr. Gettys also helped to build the Mission House that still serves Missionaries on furlough.  He was Chairman of the Building Committee which erected the current Family Life Center.  He taught the oldest men’s Sunday School Class for more than 45 years.  Mr. Gettys was a graduate of Hollis High School and a veteran of the United States Army where he served in WWII with the 330^th Regiment of the 83^rd Infantry Division.

   Mr. Gettys was preceded in death by his parents, James Horace and Malissie Allen Gettys, a son, Jerry Ronel Gettys, his first wife of almost 62 years, Hester Dixon Gettys, and four brothers, Glen, Rosco, Kenneth, and James and a sister, Ossie Gettys Cline.

   Mr. Gettys is survived by his wife, Blanche Greene Walker Gettys of the home, granddaughters, Alison Gettys of Winston-Salem, NC, and Jennifer Gettys Walton and husband Adrian Walton and a great granddaughter, Abigail Hudson of Wakefield, England.

   Funeral services will be held 7:00 pm Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Terry Cagle, Rev. Andy Oliver, and Rev. Steve Austin.  The family will receive from 5:30 – 7:00 pm prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.  Burial will be held 11:00 am Friday at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
