Irene Self Dixon

Irene Self Dixon, 95, of Sterling House Retirement Community, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Kings Mountain Hospice House.  The funeral will be held at Zion Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.  The family will receive friends in the vestibule of the church one hour prior to the service.  Irene was born on November 20, 1917 in Cleveland County to the late Lester G. Self and Peggy Queen Self.  She was one of five children and the last remaining one living.  Irene graduated from Casar High School in 1935 and Brevard Jr. College in 1937.  With a desire to travel, Irene worked in Haverstraw, NY and Ypsilanti, Michigan before entering nurses training.  Upon receiving her RN degree in 1945 from Gordon Crowell School of Nursing in Lincolnton, NC, Irene worked at Duke Hospital and Catawba General in Newton, NC.  While working at Catawba, Irene was introduced to her future husband O.C. Dixon.  Irene returned to Cleveland County where she worked 33 years as a private duty nurse, a charge nurse at Cleveland Memorial Hospital, she retired from Beam’s Nursing Home as the charge nurse in 1979.  Irene was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, Mission Friends, and Girls Auxiliary.  She was also a member of WMU and president for a number of years. 

Irene is survived by her daughters, Peggy Brown (Don) of Greenville, SC and Nancy Coley (Doug) of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Nick Brown (Ashley) an Tyler Brown (Jerelle) of Greenville, SC, Ross Caley (Brooke) and Sarah Kathryn Coley of Greensboro.  Her husband of 38 years, O.C. Dixon preceded her in death on February 25, 1988.

Irene had many remarkable gifts, but two that stood out above all was her passion for her family and her love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  With God’s help she weathered life’s storms with perseverance and grace.  Her friends and family will lovingly remember her determination, energy, kindness, courage and faithfulness.

Her family greatly acknowledges the competence and generosity of the staff at Sterling House, Cleveland Memorial Hospital and Kings Mountain Hospice House.
