| J.D. Smith, 81, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Cleveland Regional Center in Shelby. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Frank Smith and Hester Smith Barner. He is also preceded in death by a son, David W. Smith; brothers, Grady Smith, Clarence Smith, E. J. Smith, James Barner; and sister, Elsie Wines.
Mr. Smith was a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church where he served for many years on the social committee. He served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a POW. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing, gardening and travel. He worked with A & P, Harris Teeter and retired from Stouffers.
Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Carolyn Tesnear Smith; five children, Guyanne Smith Craig and husband Bobby of Rutherfordton, John F. Smith and wife Terry of Mooresboro, Susan Keever and husband Tommy of Rutherfordton, Dr. Renee Melton-Smith and husband Paul of Shelby, Joel Melton of Shelby; brother Donald Barner and wife Mozelle of Rutherfordton; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; special neighbor, Gene Ridings; special caregiver, Wanda Parker. The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Barry Coalson, N.P. Emily Gantt and the staff of Shelby Medical Associates.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Waters and Rev. Boyd Jackson will be officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park with military rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Cecil M Burton Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.
