James Oscar Bell
James Oscar Bell “Sonny”, 67, of 111 Carriage Court South, Shelby, NC, departed this life on Tuesday June 19, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC.  He was born February 4, 1945 in Cleveland County, North Carolina to the late Jersey Lee and Claudie Thurman Bell. James was the last of this family to transition.  James was preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy Lee Bell, and Jimmy Bell and one sister Nettie Bell Kudva.

James graduated from Douglas High School and entered into the United States Army where he served his country having received the Purple Heart.  Upon return from duty he was employed by Hickory Manufactory and later PPG Industries were he remained until he retired after thirty-eight years of employment.  Being a man that enjoyed staying busy, despite retirement he worked with his daughter at Cleveland Family Services, Inc.

James was not a stranger to hard work which derived from his zeal and love of being a provider for his family.  His favorite pastimes included fishing with his wife Betty, watching Western movies and spots on television, and working in the yard.  He often expressed that yard work and gardening allowed him the opportunity to meditate on God, the Word and fellowship with the Holy Spirit as he considered the beauty of creation.

James’s most noted pleasures were reading and studying the Bible and material on the Christian faith.  He enjoyed discussing the Scriptures with others.  James was baptized at an early age but truly acknowledged what it meant to accept Christ in his adult years.  He loved God, and was studious of the word of God.  James enjoyed witnessing the Gospel to others. James was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church during his later years of life and prior to that was a member of Palmers Grove Baptist Church and Light Oak Baptist Church where he served as Trustee and Adult Sunday School Teacher.  He was spiritually and affectionately fond of these churches because of the experiences and fellowship that aided in his personal and spiritual development.

James was a disciplined man.  He executed wisdom in judgment and character. James was a man that loved and provided for his family.   He leaves to cherish a loving wife of forty-three years Betty Peak Bell, two children, Cassandra Bell-Gash (Bruce) of Shelby, NC and Tameka Shanice Bell of Shelby, NC; three grand children, Jahra Avondia Bell Gash, Amarie James Bell, and Drayton Le’Veer Bell; four sisters in-law, Geneva Marshall (Ralph) of Baltimore, MD, Dorris Morris (Johnnie) of Baltimore, MD, Lillie Perry of Shelby, NC, and Sandra Beasley of Shelby, NC; two brothers in-law, James Peak of Shelby, NC and Samuel Lockhart of Shelby, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
