Joe Dewey Helms age 70 died Monday, November 17, 2014 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born in Cleveland County on October 17, 1944 he was the son of the late Joe Lee and Mary Loraine Dulin Helms. Dewey was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. He worked at Printing and Packaging Inc. and formerly worked at Fiber Industries. He was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking. In addition to his parents, Dewey is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Helms. 

Dewey is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Phillips Helms; a son, Scott Helms and a fiancée Michelle Royster of Fallston; two brothers, Clayton Helms and wife Brenda of Indian Trail, Wayne Helms and wife Pam of Shelby; one sister, Gay Melton and husband Steve of Shelby; sister-in-law, Lynda Helms of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory from 11:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M.  A private memorial service will be held following the visitation with Dr. Timothy Sims officiating.
