John David Kilby
Mr. John David Kilby, 76, of 406 Spring Street, died on April 19, 2014 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby after a brief illness.

He was born on July 8, 1937 in Hickory, North Carolina a son of the late Thad D. Kilby and Louise Setzer Kilby.  He was a graduate of Cherryville High School, Appalachian State University, and Western Carolina University.  At Appalachian State University, he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and he was a proud member of the Appalachian Marching Band.  At Western Carolina University, he earned an educational specialist degree.  He had a thirty year career in education with Gaston County Schools and Cleveland Community College.  Mr. Kilby served as the first Principal of Cherryville Junior High.  He then joined the faculty and staff at Cleveland Community College.  After his retirement, Mr. Kilby served as a Funeral Director for Carpenter’s Funeral Home in Cherryville and served as Funeral Director and Manager of Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home from 1998 until 2004.  Mr. Kilby was a life- long member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville where he sang in the choir, and served as Sunday School Superintendent.   He was also a member of Cherryville Masonic Lodge #505 A.F. & A.M for over 50 years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Teddy Robinson Kilby, the love of his life and a brother Larry Kilby.

Survivors include his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Teena Joy Thornburg Melton and the Rev. David Melton; Teddi Thornburg Zayas and Frank Zayas and Amy Kay Kilby; two granddaughters, Kathryn Reeves Melton and Kelly Marie Zayas. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Thad Kilby and Ellen; a sister, Alice Kilby Wacaster; a sister-in-law Betty Jane Robinson; special family friends, Johnny and Brenda Stroupe and Ronnie and Laurean Sellers.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 9:45 until 10:45AM in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church and at other times the family will be at the home.

 A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, April 23, 2014at First Presbyterian Church of Cherryville with Dr. Bill Lowe and the Rev. David Melton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
