John Harrelson, age 87 of 3900 Brookwood Road, died December 29, 2012 at his residence. He was born November 25, 1925 in Gaston County a son of the late W. Claude and Beatrice Dellinger Harrelson. John was a WWII US Army Veteran and was a retired pipe fitter and a member of the Local 96 Pipe Fitter Union. After his retirement he worked as the cook for Newell Baptist Church Daycare for 12 years. He was a wonderful husband and father and a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Choir member at Newell Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Grimes Harrelson, Sr., Stacy Harrelson and S.S. Harrelson, six sisters, Sarah Jane Doering, Dorothy Radcliff, Ann Floyd, Frances Powell, Mary Jane Jenkins and Willie Harreslon.
Survivors include his wife Patsy Jane Self Harrelson of the home, three daughters, Denise Harrelson of Charlotte, Donnie Harrelson Clayton and husband Dale of Raleigh, NC, Leah Harrelson Ashworth and husband John D. of Brevard, NC, ten grandchildren and twenty two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Newell Baptist Church in Charlotte on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Scott Keith and Rev. John D. Ashworth officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Newell Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:45 in the church sanctuary prior to the funeral.
