John Leon Wortman

Mr. John Leon Wortman, 90, of Shelby, passed away July 28, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He is survived by three sons, Ted Wortman and wife Rosemary, Kevin Wortman and wife Rhonda, and Neal Wortman and wife Alica, all of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Kristi Bowen and husband Marty, Erin Sarratt and husband Jason, Heather Stephens, John Wortman and wife Melissa, Zachary Wortman and wife Candace, Eli Wortman and wife Lauren, and Samuel Wortman; eleven great-grandchildren, Alexis McMahan and husband Skyler, Mary Logan Bowen, Caroline Borders, Corbyn Wiggins, Emma Sarratt, Caden McEntire and husband Clint, Tate Stephens, Calvin Wortman, Connor Wortman, Luke Wortman, and Adelyn Wortman and a sister, Doris McDaniel of Kings Mountain.
Born January 12, 1926 in Cleveland County, Mr. Wortman was the son of the late John Wortman and Hattie Mae Hunt Wortman and was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Polly Jean McSwain Wortman and a granddaughter, Kimberly Borders.
A veteran of WWII, Mr. Wortman served in the United States Army as an Infantryman in Europe. He was a lifelong member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Leon worked and retired after working more than 40 years from Dover Mills. He enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Paul Sorrells and Rev. Phil Hughes. A visitation will be held from 9:30 - 10:45 am prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family would like to express a sincere thanks to the staff at Wendover Hospice and Helping Hands. A special thanks to Robbie Mobley and Sheila Shade for the special care that they provided for Leon.
