Joseph “Joe” E. Cabaniss
Joseph “Joe” E. Cabaniss, Sr, 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Hospice Cleveland County – Wendover Facility.  A native of Cleveland County (Zion Community), he was the son of the late George Turner “G.T.” and Georgia Bryte Beam Cabaniss.  He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Aileen Cabaniss, Sarah Johnson, and Carolyn Diehl.  Joe was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon and was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.  Joe was in the banking industry for 60 years.  He was president/CEO for First Federal Savings Bank (the first recognized savings bank in North Carolina) and he retired with over 10 years of service with First National Bank.  Joe spent much of his time in community involvement.  He was a Cleveland County Commissioner from 1988 – 1993 and served as chairman from 1989 – 1993 as well as being on the NC Association of County Commissioners.  He was the former clerk-treasurer of Kings Mountain Baptist Association for 20 years, past president of Shelby Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club of Shelby, former chairman of Cleveland Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees.  He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII.  Joe loved playing golf at the Cleveland Country Club – where his claim to fame was two hole-in-one’s during his lifetime.  He also enjoyed traveling with family and friends as well as watching Atlanta Braves baseball games.

Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma Jean Farmer Cabaniss; sons, Joseph “Joey” Edwin Cabaniss, Jr. of Tryon and David Wayne Cabaniss of Charlotte; daughter, Karen Cabaniss Hall and husband George of Shelby; sisters, Brenda Curtis and husband Steve of Shelby, Elizabeth Blanton of Lattimore, Doris Wright of Melbourne, FL; brothers, Robert Cabaniss and wife Evelyn of Greensboro, George Cabaniss and wife Janice of Shelby, Hal Cabaniss and wife Martha of Bostic; grandchildren, Becky Hall, Lucy Hall McDaniel and husband Trevor, Patty Hall, Katelyn Cabaniss; great grandson, William Hall McDaniel.

 A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, May 31, 2013 at the sanctuary of First Baptist Church.  The Rev. Tony Tench will be officiating.  At other times the family will be at the home.
