Juanita (Nita) Virginia Cook Mauney

Mrs. Juanita (Nita) Virginia Cook Mauney, 91, of Orange, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at Wendover Hospice House of Shelby. Born on May 9th, 1924, in Orange, Virginia, Juanita was the daughter of the late John Mayfield Cook and Givy Cook Walters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Setzer Mauney; a son, Alan Clyde Mauney, and grandson Evan Wes Allen; a brother E. Chester Cook of Vienna, Virginia; and two sisters, Helen Cook Bass of Jacksonville, Florida, and Marjory Cook Cobbs of Richmond, Virginia.

She is survived by a son, Curtis Mauney, and his wife, Renee, of Statesville; two daughters, Janis Mauney Wright and her husband, Rick, of Kings Mtn., and Judy Mauney Roddick and husband, Dale, of Gastonia; sister-n-law, Sybol Mauney of Shelby. She is survived by her grandsons, Jason Myers and wife, Shelby, of Kings Mtn.; Matt Myers of Charlotte, and Staff Sgt. Aaron Allen and wife, Katie, of Germany; a granddaughter, Whitney Mauney Tomlin and husband, Nick, of Elkin, North Carolina; great grandchildren, Melia Myers, Banks Myers, Maggie Tomlin, Will Tomlin, and Evan Alton Allen, who lovingly called her "Granny." She is also survived by step grandchildren, Jeremy Martin, Melody Wright, Brandon Wright and wife, Jennifer; Colleen Roddick and Kelly Roddick; step great grandchildren, McKenzie Martin, Mylee Martin, Sam Martin, Cody Wright and Emilee Wright.

After graduating from Orange High School in Orange, Virginia, she worked in a defense plant in Orange, Virginia, during WWII making parachute cloth for the Army Air Corps. After meeting her husband, Clyde, in a church in Orange, Virginia, she moved to Shelby, NC, and retired from Belks, after 26 years. Nita was a faithful member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the Bayliss Sunday School class, and the Young at Heart. Aldersgate was always an integral part of her life. She was always willing to serve whenever asked. Her daily life was a testament to her strong faith. She was an avid reader and a loyal member of the Friends of the Library.

Her life revolved around her church and her family. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She set the ultimate example of a life well lived through her kindness, her loving ways, her gentle spirit, her strong faith, sweet smile and sense of humor. Her favorite hobbies were cooking for her family and friends, listening to Gaither Gospel music, and keeping up with Nascar! She was loved by everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was truly a special lady, and Heaven is singing today!

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm, Thursday, March 17th, 2016 with Rev. Sylvia Wilhelm officiating. Burial to follow at Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-3pm at Aldergate's Epworth Center.
