Kenneth Dean Backhaus

Mr. Kenneth Dean Backhaus, 74, of 532 Tot Dellinger Rd. passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Ken was born on January 12, 1939 in Nebraska a son of the late Roy Backhaus and Mildred Olsen Backhaus.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cherryville and a lifetime member of American Quarter Horse Association.  Ken was brought to Cherryville to train horses by the late C. Grier Beam and was a retired Manager and Horse Trainer at Sun Beam Farms and accomplished having the 1969 all American Quarter Horse congress stallion champion Wallaby and Quarter Horse congress mare Champion Golden Market in the same year.  Ken also managed and showed multiple world champions throughout his career as a Quarter horse trainer and judge.   He thoroughly enjoyed his work instructing youth and fellowshipping with friends, family, loved ones and never met a stranger.  Ken served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Vicki Cummings and a sister Joellen Montag.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Kristi B. Buff and Steve of Cherryville; a sister Jeanne Bang of Omaha, Nebraska and four grandchildren, Michael and David Cummings of Fort Worth, Texas and Tyler and Kacee Buff of Cherryville.

Visitation will be held on Friday April 26, 2013 from 1:45 to 2:45PM at First United Methodist Church in Cherryville.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 3:00PM at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Fite officiating.

Burial will be in Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery.
