Lillian Eugenia Wyatt Howell

Mrs. Lillian Eugenia Wyatt Howell, 93, of 1206 Frederick St. Shelby, NC entered eternal rest peacefully on September 8, 2015. She was born in Atlanta, GA on October 16, 1921, to the late John Frank Wyatt and Lillie Bell Culberson Wyatt.

Growing up in Atlanta, Lillian attended Atlanta Public Schools, and graduated from the historic Booker T. Washington High School. She earned a B.A. in Home Economics from Clark Atlanta University. She later earned a M.S. in Education from North Carolina Central University. A Howell family relative, who lived in Atlanta, Ga, Winnie G. Borders, introduced Lillian to her future husband, the late William Brodus Howell. After their marriage, the couple moved to Shelby, NC and began their careers as educators in the Cleveland County area. She taught at Green Bethel High School, Camp High School, West Cleveland Junior High School, and Crest Middle, from which she retired after 42 years. Throughout her career, she was a dedicated teacher and confidant to many children in Cleveland County. Lillian and Brodus, her loving husband, were married for 64 years.

Lillian enjoyed time with church, community, and family. She was a long time member of Wardell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, where she was very fond of singing in the choir. She also raised her four children in Wardell Church. She was a regular attendee at both the Wyatt Family Reunion and the Roberts, Borders, Mauney, Howell, Briggs and Related Familes Reunion and she especially enjoyed spending time with relatives near and far. She was a charter member of the Shelby Negro Women's Club. Also, one of her passions was coordinating and directing weddings.

Lillian was a dedicated member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated since 1947. She was a charter member of the Gastonia Alumna Chapter until 1983, when she also helped to charter the Shelby Alumnae Chapter. She was active in many areas of the sorority, including serving as a delegate to regional and national conventions when she was well into her 80's. One of her ideas for the Shelby Chapter was the Annual Jabberwalk - the "Delta Dream Girl Pageant." With this project, she and the chapter members mentored young ladies as the chapter provided numerous scholarships to participants from the Cleveland County School System. In addition to receiving chapter and regional awards from the sorority, she was a Diamond Life Member.

Lillian was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, great-grandmother, mentor and friend who touched the lives of many. She will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Theodore Wyatt, William Alonzo Wyatt, Oneida "Dimples" Wyatt Jenkins and Essie Mae Wyatt Harland.

Lillian leaves many loving memories to be cherished by her children and family. She was blessed to be the mother to 4 children whom she was proud of and so enjoyed, William Brodus Howell, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; Vincent Wyatt Howell (Carolyn) of Horseheads, NY; Darryl Dyonisius Howell (Tracey) of Freemont, CA; and Angela Wineida Howell-Cunningham of Charlotte, NC.; two brothers, John Frank Wyatt, Jr. (Louise) and Alfred Dyonisius Wyatt, Sr., both of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren, whom she was also extremely fond of, Naila Shana Howell, Vincent Wyatt Howell, Jr. (Latoya), Kia Nicole Cunningham, Tayla Wyatt Cunningham, Caylan Darryl Howell, and Dylan Brice Howell, as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Vincent Wyatt Howell, III, and Camryn Lee Howell. She is also survived by her in-laws, Max D. Howell (Martha), Helen Howell, Winnie H.
