Loyd Ray Champion

Blacksburg -- Loyd Ray Champion, 90, of 623 Cherokee Falls Road, passed away Wednesday, March 1st, 2017, at his home.

Born in Gaffney, he was the widower of Betty Hampton Champion and the son of the late Raymond Lepwood Champion and Mary Pearl Patrick Champion. Mr. Champion owned his own business in Kings Mountain for many years and later retired from Burlington Industries. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church of Blacksburg and a veteran of the US Army.

Mr. Champion is survived by one son, Michael Champion (Hollie) of Shelby, NC; two daughters, Donna Chang of Blacksburg and Debbie Ziegler (Terry) of Gaffney; seven grandchildren, Brandon Champion, Jeremy Champion (Brandy), Jennifer Ziegler Cantrell (Jonathan), Jon Ziegler (Leah), Lindsey Beckham (Josh), Brooke Champion Hickson, and Jessica Bean; and six great-grandchildren, Josilyn, Jameson, Caroline, Nora, Ava, and Cooper.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Champion was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Olin Champion, James Clinton Champion, and Roy Eugene Champion, and one sister, Lillian Winona Best.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 4th, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Gordon Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 5th, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Eastside Baptist Church of Blacksburg with Rev. Eric Sellers and Rev. Virgil Hampton officiating. Entombment will follow at Clingman Memorial Gardens. Brandon Champion, Jeremy Champion, Josh Beckham, Jonathan Cantrell, Donnie Hampton, David Hampton, Danny Hampton, and Tim Rape will serve as pallbearers.
