Mrs. Lucy Elizabeth Spikes Mason, 87, of 1279 Hopewell Road Shelby, NC departed this life on Monday November 11, 2013 at Hospice  in Shelby NC.  She was born on October 26, 1926 in Cleveland County NC to the late Mr. & Mrs. Miller Spikes and the late Omie Gidney Spikes.

In her youth she was a member of Brooks Chapel, but later joined White Oak Springs Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her health declined in the late1990s. 

Lucy played a vital role in raising all of her grandchildren and several of her great grandchildren.  She loved her family and enjoyed singing God's praises.  Lucy defined the word strength, being the glue that held her family together. With her wisdom, she always knew exactly which child needed her the most and was always able to give that child the attention and love they needed.  Lucy didn't just speak of God, but she always encouraged her family to seek a relationship with him. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, of 53 years, Walter “Dub” Mason; her son, John Samuel Mason; her sisters, Ruth Lee and Madge Lee Spikes and her brother H.P. Spikes. 

She leaves to cherish fond memories 4 children, Mildred Spikes of the home, Walter “Bo” Mason and Calvin Mason both of Ellenboro, NC and Elaine Mason of Forest City, NC; a brother, William Spikes (Verdie) of Shelby NC; a sister, Jeanette Roberts of High Point NC; a daughter-in-law, Mary Mason of Shelby; 16 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Palmer Grove Baptist Church with Pastor James L. Smith officiating and Minister Elisha Ramseur delivering the eulogy.  Burial will take place at White Oak Springs Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 PM at the church on Saturday.  Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloes.net.  Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
