Manning Eugene "Gene" Carroll Jr.

Blacksburg -- Manning Eugene "Gene" Carroll Jr., 62, of 587 Rockhouse Road, passed away Tuesday, April 11th, 2017, at Oak Grove Health Center of Rutherfordton, NC.

Born in Kings Mountain, he was the husband of Shirley Moore Carroll and the son of the late Manning Eugene Carroll Sr. and Fannie Mae Jackson Carroll. Gene devoted a great portion of his life to public service, beginning as an EMT for Grover Rescue in the 1970s. He then joined the Grover Fire Department before joining the Antioch Fire Department, where he served as fire chief for several years. He served as a first responder and worked as a dispatcher for Cherokee County 911. Mr. Manning was a tax preparer for over forty years and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Manning is survived by two sons, Tommy Carroll and wife, Nicole, of Kings Mountain and James Carroll of Grover; one daughter, Amy Butler and husband, Mark, of Grover; two grandsons, Alex Carroll of Kings Mountain and John Tyler Carroll of Boiling Springs, NC; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Moore, of Blacksburg.

Mr. Manning was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth Jackson Carroll.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 13th, 2017, from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at Gordon Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 14th, 2017 at 3:00 pm in the Gordon Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Vernon Craig officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Billy Moore, Mark Butler, Brian Manning, John Coyle, Dylan Ramsey, Mike Patterson, Aron Pennington, and Roger Moore will serve as pallbearers.
