Margaret McInnis Best, age 96, died Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Trinity Ridge in Hickory. Born in Kannapolis on September 26, 1919 she was the daughter of the late Rev. Neill and Janie Hamer McInnis. She was raised in the Philadelphus community of Robeson County, where her father was a Presbyterian minister. She graduated from Flora McDonald College, now St. Andrews, in 1940 and taught elementary school prior to marrying Herman Best in 1945 and moving to Shelby. They were happily married for 69 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shelby where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She was also a member of the Benjamin Cleveland Daughters of the American Revolution, a long- time member and past president of the Chicora Book Club, and an active member of the Christian Service Organization at Gardner Webb University. Margaret enjoyed traveling, reading, camping, fishing, cooking, and especially friends and family. Margaret is remembered for her warm and generous spirit and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition, to her parents and husband, Margaret is preceded in death by a son, Rev. David Best; sisters, Janie Hamer Woodley, and Mary McInnis Smith.
Margaret is survived by a daughter, Jane Ann Best of Morganton; grandson, J. D. Best and wife, Maureen, of Roanoke VA., granddaughter, Rachel Best of Charlotte; great grandson, Hartford Best; niece and husband, Drs. Jane and Murray Sprull of Raleigh.
Funeral service will be held on Monday April 18, 2016 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church Webb Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before the service from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the Ladies Parlor.
