Martha Virginia “Ginny” Parker Spears

Martha Virginia “Ginny”  Parker Spears, age 90,  died Tuesday August 19, 2014 at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.  Born in McDowell County on January 12, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Charles Cathroe and Bessie Adeline Huffman Parker. Ginny was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby where she worked as an educational secretary for over 12 years. Then she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Aiken SC. She was very active in church functions as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Church, family, and community service was Ginny’s life. She was very active in her community and was a member of several organizations: PEO, Shelby Lions Club Lionette, Kings Mountain Baptist Association, Chicoro Book club, and was a volunteer for Hospice and the hospital. In addition to her parents, Ginny is preceded in death by her husband, James B. Spears Sr. and three brothers, Charles Parker, Clarence Parker, and Paul Parker.

Ginny is survived by three sons, James Spears Jr. and wife Sue of Charlotte, John Spears of Shelby, and Jeff Spears and wife Susan of Augusta Ga.; two daughters, Sandra Guy of Christiansburg Va., and Pam McGinnis and husband Hubert of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Ada Cutherberson of Nebo and Jewel McNeal of Marion; a brother, Max Parker of High Shoals; eleven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday August 23, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Tench officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory and also following the service. A private burial will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park.
