Mary Jane Perkins, 88, died Tuesday November 19, 2013 at Sterling House in Shelby. Born in Seattle Washington on August 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Michael Edward and Della Grubesich Burke. She attended Belmont College in Seattle Washington and finished her degree in education at UNC Asheville. She taught junior high for three years in Hendersonville and twenty years in Cobb County Georgia. She was a member of the Georgia Teachers Association. After retirement, she was the bookkeeper for her daughter’s radiation oncology practice. She was devoted to literacy and child welfare and in her spare time she enjoyed sewing and gardening.
Mary is survived by her husband of 65 years, Gerald Perkins; two sons, Patrick Perkins and wife Lisa of Sunnyvale, California, and Michael Perkins and wife Marsha of London England; two daughters, Paula Perkins of Mooresville, and Dr. Petya Lee Perkins of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Jeffrey Perkins, Michael Ryan Perkins, and Sean Thomas Perkins.
A Memorial service will be held at a later date.
