Mary Martha Bingham Hunt
Mary Martha Bingham Hunt, 86, of 3838 Artee Rd., Lattimore, NC, passed on to a better place on August 12th at the Wendover Hospice House.

She was born in Watauga County, NC on April 24th, 1927 to Charles McKinley Bingham and Ruth Rhodes Bingham. After graduating from Cove Creek High School in 1944 as Salutatorian, she attended Salem College, Appalachian Teacher’s College, and Gardner-Webb University. She met her future husband, Robert Lee Hunt Jr., on the tennis courts in front of her home in Sugar Grove, NC. They were married in Waynesville, NC on November 18th, 1945. After living in western NC for two years, they moved back to Robert’s hometown of Lattimore, NC, establishing a dairy farm and raising their family. A devoted wife and mother, Mary was happiest taking care of her children and grandchildren. After her kids were older, she accepted a job as a social worker with the Cleveland County School system.

Mary was a very strong-willed, determined, and courageous woman; she overcame many obstacles in life. Faced with a debilitating spinal condition in her early forties, she was forced to retire and her mobility was limited for the rest of her life. Five years later, she lost her husband at an early age. Despite her losses, she was able to continue running Huntland Farms for over thirty years.

Mary had a very strong Christian faith. A devoted member of Lattimore Baptist Church, she was always very active in the church, serving as president of the WMU and supporting foreign missions. Along with her extreme kindness and generosity, she is best remembered for her integrity that set an example for all to live by.

She is survived by her children, Mary Linda Hunt of Asheville, NC, Robert Lee Hunt III of Boone, NC, David Bingham Hunt and wife Michel of Oak Island, NC, and John Jackson Hunt of Kings Mountain, NC; grandchildren Nicole, Andrew, Sydney, Robert, and Hayley; and great-grandson Blaize. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Charles David Bingham, her husband, Robert Lee Hunt Jr., and her infant son Charles Lee Hunt.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 14th from 2:00pm-4:00pm at Lattimore Baptist Church, and the service will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hands On Missions Inc., P.O. Box 279 Shelby, NC 28151 or to Lottie Moon Missions Fund C/O Lattimore Baptist Church.
