Mary Sommers Neisler

Mary Sommers Neisler died peacefully October 10, 2021 at Hospice of Cleveland County-Wendover Road, Shelby.

Mary was born on January 26, 1931 to Goodloe Gooch Sommers and Elizabeth S. Sommers in Charlotte, NC. She graduated from Central High School, Charlotte and attended Queens College (now Queens University). While attending a Tommy Dorsey concert she met the love of her life, Charles A. Neisler. They were married on March 31, 1951, and remained happily married for over 61 years.

Upon moving to live in Kings Mountain, Mary became active in community life. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served in the church's girl scout program, choir, property and grounds committee and in 1994 was elected elder. But her favorite service there was teaching in the Nursery with Mary Adams.

In the community she was active in historic preservation. Mary served as President for the Cleveland County Historical Museum and was instrumental if the creation of the Kings Mountain Historical Museum. She was active on the Kings Mountain Historic Landmark Commission and the Cleveland County Historical Survey Task Force. In 1999, she rescued and restored the c.1870 William Andrew Mauney home on Battleground Avenue. That landmark is now on the National Register for Historic Property. She assisted the formation of the Davidson Alumni Resource Center, Inc. and helped the non-profit to obtain their building on Parker Street in Kings Mountain. Preserving our heritage was important to her. For her charitable efforts she received the first Spirit of Kings Mountain Pride in Community Award in 2006 and the Cleveland County Distinguished Woman award in 2007.
