Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC will be holding the following events in March and April:
Bingo - Each Monday Night (except holidays). Doors open at 5:30 (no admittance after 7:00pm). Jackpot - 60 people or more $500, 60 people or less $300. Public invited 12 years old and up.
Older American's Month "Super Spectacular" - Friday, May 1, 2015, 3:00pm with Open House and Information Fair. Free hot dog supper beginning at 5:00pm to all raffle participants and contributors. All others, $5. Reverse drawing will begin at 6:00pm. Tickets, $50 each (for a chance to win $3000 grand prize). Other chances to win (4) $500 plus other prizes will be given away. Annual Golf Tournament, Deer Brook Golf Club, Shelby
The Board of Directors and Staff of Child Care Connections invite you to participate in their annual golf tournament on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Deer Brook Golf Club. They are the county's only child care resource and referral agency funded through the Cleveland County Partnership for Children and the North Carolina Child Care Resource and Referral Council. Whether you play in the tournament, sponsor a hole, offer a door prize, or simply make a donation, you are making a positive impact on the future of Early Childhood Education and the children of Cleveland County. 4th Annual Cliffords Army Rescue Extravaganza
The 4th Annual Cliffords Army Rescue Extravaganza will be Saturday, April 18, 2015. This years event will feature the Ride to Rescue Poker Run, with a pre-registration party at Skooterz on Friday night, April 17, 2015. The poker run will have added incentives as there are baskets worth at least $100 available for participants to win at each stop. Cliffords Car Show will be back this year. $20 entry fee, top 20 awards plus a peoples choice award. Cliffords Canine Cuties Pageant will feature Sheriff Alan Norman, Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford, New York Times Best Selling Author, Kay Hooper, Charlotte Media personality, Barbara McKay, and local animal advocate, Sherry Crowder. Overall winner and runner up as well as winners in each division. Also a Most Photogenic Award will be given by the public's vote. Live entertainment provided by The Chris Ledbetter Trio, Skp Weever and Relentless. American Jewelry and Music was kind enough to donate and operate all sound equipment. The Cleveland county Sheriffs Dept K9's will put on a demonstration at 3:00pm on the midway. Jump Crazy Moonwalks will have two inflatables there for the kids along with face painting, games, coloring contests, and much more. 12 and under are in free. A live Auction will be held around 4:45pm (time approximate after awards ceremony with auctioneer Jason Falls. Live plant sales, vendors, rescues from as far away as Maryland and New Jersey, Clifford's Army Adoptable Dogs, are just a few of the highlights. The day will end with a memorial service at the Cliffords Memorial Wall in memory of our four legged family members who have went to rainbow bridge. Gates open at 10:00am. Admission $5, under 12 free. Dogs welcome, must be current on rabies, bordetella and dhpp vaccines. All dogs must be leashed at all times. Spring Bulky Item Pickup, City of Shelby
The City of Shelby Solid Waste Department is having the Spring Bulky Item Pick-up the week of April 20-23, 2015. Beginning on Friday, April 17, 2015, you may begin placing items such as: furniture, boxes, mattresses, and bagged clothes, etc., on the curbside without being subject to citations or fines. Please do not place any items in the street or mix these items with limbs, leaves, or grass. The Solid Waste Department does not pick-up items such as: appliances, electronics, televisions, tires, building materials, paints, oils, and batteries, these items may be taken to the Cleveland County Landfills. Bulky Items will be picked up only on the same day during the week that your garbage is scheduled for pick-up. Items placed or left on the curb after Thursday, April 23, 2015, will be subject to citations and fines. There will be no leaf or brush collection during bulky item pick-up week.
Annual Iron City Festival, Blacksburg
The Iron City Festival is approaching. The Blacksburg Business Association's tenth annual event will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 9:00am - 9:00pm in the downtown area. The 3rd annual Little Miss Iron City Festival pageant will include girls through age ten. Toss in a miniature train exhibit, food, vendor shopping, health fair, cake contest, kid's parade, student art display, petting zoo, wrestling, activities for the children in a free kids' zone including inflatables. Bring your car, truck, or motorcycle to put on display---no entry fee, no prizes, no trophies.....just letting others admire your vehicle. All events are free except an entry fee for those participating in the pageant. Bring your camera to take pictures in the Big Red Chair. "PLAIR" from Rock Hill will be the featured band from 7:00-9:00pm. Bring your chair and enjoy a variety of music. The festival will end with fireworks around 10:00. If possible, bring canned food or other non-perishable to be donated to Iron City Ministries. Food Lion will have a booth set-up up nearby to receive your food items and will match up to 2,000 pounds of food donated. Shelby American Legion Post #82 will sponsor a Cruise In on Saturday, April 18, 2015 (Rain Date April 25) from 10:00am until 2:00pm at the Legion Post, 1628 South Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC. Special Olympics Cleveland County
Special Olympics Cleveland County will be holding its annual Spring Track and Field event at Shelby High School on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Opening Ceremonies will begin at 9:00am. Come out and support our local athletes. Admission is free for everyone. There will be concessions and souvenirs, with all proceeds going to Special Olympics Cleveland County.
Lattimore Historical Society Spring Fling
The Lattimore Historical Society will have their "Spring Fling", Saturday, April 18, 2015, 5:00-8:00pm. Barbecue Dinner with drink and dessert. Buy your ticket at The Depot Cafe for $10. Street dance, DJ Wolfman, Shag - Line Dance - Square Dance. Cake Walks. Please bring your chair.

The Foothills Post-Polio Support Group
The Foothills Post-Polio Support Group, formerly called the Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group, will hold the April meeting at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby, NC on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 6:00 in the evening. The conference room is located at the back of the building. The center is located off Hwy 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd, just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. Each person attending should bring his/her own meal. Drinks- coffee and water will be provided. The program for April will be Yoga for seniors presented by Caroline Dedmon. Cleveland County Arts Council
Exib dates: April 23 - May 21, 2015. Opening Reception: April 23, 5:30-7:30pm. The artwork by students in grades 3-12 will be on exhibit during this annual competition. Cash prizes are awarded to the best and the brightest young artists of tomorrow. Free. Come see it all for yourself. Scavenger hunt for kids.
Junior Charity League of Shelby, Inc.
The Junior Charity League of Shelby, NC, proudly presents its 1st Annul Charity Chase 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, April 25, 2015. With start and finish lines at the Shelby City Park, the course winds through the beautiful Sunset Cemetery where the late country music legend and Shelby native, Don Gibson, was laid to rest. Runners will pass Betty Singleton Holdridge's inspirational tombstone, which reads, "She came to Shelby as a simple fat lady in the fair. She left this earth as our friend." The course continues to the Historical District of Uptown Shelby, looping around the Courtsquare that houses the Earl Scruggs Center. This museum is dedicated to preserving the life story of legendary five-string banjo master and Cleveland County native, Earl Scruggs. Runners will make their final push back to the finish line at the Shelby Park where the award celebration will take place. 100% of proceeds will be used to purchase new clothing and hygiene items for Cleveland County children in need.
