Lawndale Historical Society
The Lawndale Historical Society will hold an Open House on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at 3:00pm, at the Lawndale Museum. One of the new exhibits features the life of J.T. and Lue Senior Laughlin. Entertainment and refreshments will be by the Laughlin Family.
Cleveland County Arts Council
The Cleveland County Arts Council presents Chalk Fest, a fun, family friendly, sidewalk chalk drawing event partnership with Uptown Shelby Association. Sign up today for an individual square to decorate with chalk. Organizations, adults and children are welcome. Registration. $10 organization, $5 individual. Please register by June 8, 2015. Registration on the day of the event will also be available, as space permits. Rain or shine. No refunds available. A chalk contest for the best drawing will be judged after 12:30pm. Cash prizes for best in category. Prizes are $150 cash for adult and organization and $50 cash prize for best in youth category. Check-in and day of registration begins at 9:00am. All chalk art must be completed before judging begins at 12:30pm. Check-in table will be located at The Cleveland County Arts Council, 111 S. Washington St., Shelby, NC. Competition area will be on the Court Square. Subject to change. Only one approved 2'x3' sidewalk square is allowed per person. Space is limited, so preregistration is recommended. Chalk will be provided at check-in table. Participants may bring their own chalk or purchase additional chalk at the registration table. Please: No Oil Based chalk and no sealants. Subject matter must be appropriate for all ages and audiences. CCAC will be the final arbiters. Group entries are welcome; please choose one name for the organization registration. Please, no more than 4 artists per organization. Make sure to bring water, sunscreen, hat, knee pads, paper towels, all tools, and/or plastic to cover your square if necessary. Judges include area youth, business owners, and community leaders.
Shelby Lions Club
The Shelby Lions Club will be distributing USDA Commodities on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Cleveland County Fair Ground. Those who wish to come to the fairground on that day and fill out an application will only need some identification and must live in Cleveland County. If a person is unable to come in person, they must send a note stating the number in the family, their address and their whole family income, signed by them. The distribution is based on the number in the family and the income of the household.
Shelby City Park
The Shelby City Park will be holding summer gymnastics classes beginning June 15, 2015. Classes are held Monday through Thursday during the weeks of June 15, July 13, July 20 and August 3. Times vary depending on the age and skill level of the student. The fee is $40 per week. Classes are co-ed and available for children 3 and up. Contact Dot at 704-538-3834 or dotjh@bellsouth.net. Hospice Cleveland County
Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC, Calendar of Events for June, 2015:
"Camp Mostly Smiles" - This is a one-day retreat for children ages 6-16 who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Participants will have the opportunity to express their grief through writing, crafts, play activities and group discussions. "Hospice Volunteer Training Class" - Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12-hour course is free. "Reflections" Support Group - This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Foothills Detachment, Marine Corps League, Shelby
The Foothills Detachment, Marine Corps League, 127 West Grover Street, Shelby, NC invites all active duty and honorably discharged veterans and families to attend a Military breakfast/Memorial Brick laying service on Saturday, June 20, 2015. Methodist Churches Offer Summer Neighborhood Lunch Program
Methodist Churches offer Summer Neighborhood Lunch Program for children, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday,. July 6 thru July 31, 2015 (rain or shine), 12:00-1:30pm, at Polkville Park/Park Drive, Polkville, NC. Missionial Network 13 Methodist Churches are: Casar, Clover Hill, Double Shoals, Durham, Friendship, Kistler, Lawndale, Mount Moriah, New Home, Oak Grove, Palm Tree, Philadelphia, Pleasant Hill, Polkville, Rehobeth, and Saint Paul. Cleveland County Schools Preschool
Attention All Parents. Cleveland County Schools Preschool is accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Bethware Elementary, Boiling Springs Elementary, Casar Elementary, East Elementary, Fallston Elementary, Graham Elementary, Grover Elementary, James Love Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Marion Elementary, North Elementary, Township Three Elementary, Union Elementary, Washington Elementary, West Elementary. This program is for eligible children, 4 years of age or who will be by August 31, of this year. They will be given priority and 3 year old eligible children will fill any remaining openings. The program is designed for families with low to moderate income, regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, national origin, special needs or disabling condition. Child Support Announces Anonymous Tip Line
The Cleveland County Child Support Office has opened a new tip Line to allow the public to anonymously report the whereabouts and any other information of noncustodial parents who may be avoiding establishment and/or enforcement of a child support order. Tipsters will be able to call the Tip Line 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. They will not be asked to leave their name or any other identifying information. When calling the Tip Line, helpful information would include the noncustodial parent's full name, date of birth, current address, phone number, place of employment, vehicle tag number, or any other information that could lead to the location of the person. The number for the Tip Line is 704-487-0661 and when prompted for an extension, dial extension 727.
Shelby No-Name Al-Anon Family Group
Shelby No-Name Al-Anon Family Group meets on Mondays from 12:00-1:00pm, at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter St., Shelby, NC. The purpose of al-anon is to provide support to friends and families of alcoholics. Anyone who is affected by someone else's use of alcohol or drugs is invited to attend. Benefit Fundraiser for Jennifer Franklin
Crossroads Baptist Church will sponsor a benefit fundraiser Saturday, June 13, 2015, for Jennifer Franklin to help with numerous medical expenses. Yard sale begins at 8:00am; hot dog sale and bake sale begin at 11:00am in Fallston, at Stamey's old store building.
Fundraiser for Doug Fortenberry Cooker Fund
There will be a Rib Sale Fundraiser for Doug Fortenberry Cooker Fund. Doug and his team help Hospice Cleveland County, Teddy Bear's Beach Run, and countless others in our community. Money from this sale will go toward materials to help build a new cooker used at these area fundraisers. The sale will be Friday, June 19, 2015, at American Red Cross, 1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC. Rib pickup: 4:00pm - 6:00pm. The original Ed Fortenberry special recipe is back. $25 per rack by order only while supplies last! To order call 704-751-3593. Shelby High School Class of 1955
The Shelby High School Class of 1955 has planned their 60th reunion on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22, 2015. Friday, August 21: early arrivals will meet at Alston Bridges BBQ at 3:00pm for a 'taste of hometown BBQ'. Friday evening there will be a performance by "Elvis and his Band" at the Don Gibson Theatre. The lounge opens at 6:30 and doors to the theatre open at 7:30pm with the concert beginning at 8:00pm. Saturday noon: classmates will meet in the private dining room for a luncheon at Ichiban, 1712 East Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC. An afternoon tour is planned after the luncheon. Saturday night will be a social time and dinner at the Don Gibson Theatre. Doors to the lounge will open at 5:00pm with hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and "meet and greet". 6:00pm: dinner of BBQ pork and chicken with all the trimmings will be catered by Harry McKee. After the meal, class pictures will be made. Reservations for special seating at the "Elvis" show on Friday must be made by July 10, 2015.
