Hospice Cleveland County
       Hospice Cleveland County will hold the following events:    “Reflections” - This grief support group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Please rsvp to ext. 166 if you plan to attend. The final meetings will be held on August 16, 2011, 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.  at Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby.
   Pregnancy Loss And Infant Death Support Group - This group will offer support to families who have experienced the death of an infant or pregnancy loss. The group will meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Please RSVP to ext. 166 if you plan to attend. Meetings will be on Tuesday, August 23, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby.
     Hospice Training Class - Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12-hour course is free and there is no obligation to volunteer. To get credit for the entire course, you will need to come to one of the classes offered each day. For more information, contact ext. 111. The classes will be held on Monday, August 15, Tuesday, August 16 and Thursday, August 18, 2011.  Day classes are 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Evening classes are 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. and will be held at Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby.

Piecemakers Quilt Guild
   “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM – 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Room 319, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton.  We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting; visitors & new members are welcome.  Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting.  On August 3rd, members  display Challenge quilts - do come visit us!        Summer Schedule for City Park Carrousel and Rotary Train (through August).  Tuesday - Friday 10 AM - 1 PM and 5-8 PM. Saturday 1-6 PM and Sunday 1:30-6 PM. All rides are 50¢. Dr. Klein To Discuss Alzheimer’s Disease At Life Enrichment Center
  Dr. Kevin Klein of Klein Neurology and Sleep will discuss the topic of Alzheimer’s disease on August 11 at Life Enrichment Center in Shelby and on August 18 at the Patrick Senior Center in Kings Mountain. Both events will begin at noon and refreshments will be served. The program is part of a Coffee and Conversation series, presented free of charge by Journey, a coalition which seeks to educate the community about end-of-life issues. This program will help families understand financial issues at the end of life.
Cleveland County Library
 Cleveland County Library Book Club will meet on  Thursday, August 11, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the small conference room at the library.  They will discuss the book, “Fall of Giants” by Ken Follett.  All are invited.
    Cleveland County Library will hold  a board game night on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Food and prizes will be given.  This event is for ages 13-16.  Sign-up is required before August 16, 2011.  There will be a sign-up log located at the circulation desk at the library.  Please call Barbara Wakefield at 704-487-9069 ext 233 for more information on this event.

Inaugural Dog Days 5K & Fun Run
        On Friday, August 12, Cleveland County Residents will gather for the Inaugural Dog Days 5K & Fun Run to support the Abuse Prevention Council’s services for homeless women and children, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and displaced homemakers.  The Run will be held at Patriots Park 220 Railroad Avenue, Kings Mountain at 7:30 on August 12, 2011.  Runners can compete for prizes in their age category, run/walk just for fun or participate as a “phantom runner” to support APC but stay cool at home.  Participants can register for the Run at Kings Mountain YMCA, or online at www.Precisiontimingsystems.com.  

Casar Annual Community-Wide Yard Sale
       The 3rd Annual Casar Community Wide Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, August 13, 7 p.m. until.  on Turner Rd., Golden Valley Rd., Casar-Lawndale Rd., and Schoolhouse Rd. in downtown Casar.  Watch for signs, there will be many others. Concessions will be available. Churches will be giving different handouts. Come and join the Casar community for good deals, food fun and fellowship. 2nd Annual Zoe’s Fun Run
        The 2nd Annual Zoe’s Fun Run-In memory of Zoe Bachman benefiting the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation. 5K/10K Run & Kids 1 mile run Saturday, August 13, 2011 begins at 8am at the Gazebo downtown Kings Mountain. Registration fee for 5K & 10K: $20/person (thru July 29th, after July 29th fee is $25) Kids 1 mile run: $10/person (thru July 29th, after July 29th fee is $12) Race day registration @7am. Awards given to top 3 males & females of each age group. Kings Mountain Woman’s Club
        The Kings Mountain Woman’s Club will hold an Attic/Yard Sale on Saturday, August 13, 8:00-12:00 noon at the Club House, 109 E. Mtn. Street, Kings Mountain. There’s clothing for all ages, kitchen and household goods and much more! Proceeds benefit our scholarship recipient.

The Ultimate Big Pot Fun Run
        The Ultimate Big Pot Fun Run will be held on Saturday, August 13. $3,000 total purse will be given. 1st place $1,500; 2nd place $1,000 and 3rd place $500. All proceeds will be donated to the South Mountain Christian Camp in Bostic, NC. Cost of the ride is $20/single and double-up $30. Life Enrichment Dementia Support Group
   Are you worried about the safety of someone with dementia? Come to learn about Project Lifesaver. More than 60 percent of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease wander away from home.  The reasons are varied, but the results can be disastrous.  Project Lifesaver is one way to ease the minds of caregivers of people with dementia. At a program at Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care in Shelby on Tuesday, Aug. 16, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Dept. Deputy Melanie Martin will explain how the program works to keep people safe. The program, which is free of charge and open to the public, will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Life Enrichment at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd.  Call Linda at  Life Enrichment to have questions answered: 704.484.0405. Life Enrichment has cared for adults of all ages, including those with dementia, for more than 31 years. It has locations in Shelby and Kings Mountain.
CRMC Cancer Center 70s Dance
   Cleveland Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Center is sponsoring “We’re Going Back To The 70’s disco party on Friday, August 19, 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Cleveland County Fairgrounds. Admission is $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. Proceeds are going to the “Because We Care” fund. Refreshments will be served. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed male, female and best dancer.
Carrie Heavner Foundation 5K Run/Walk
   The Carey Heavner Foundation will be holding the 2ND annual care for Carey 5k run/walk on Saturday, August 20, 2011 @ 8:00 AM (early registration @ 7:00 AM. The run will start and end at the Shelby city park. The “care for Carey 5k run/walk” Scheduled for AUGUST 20, 2011, Is a Fundraising event being held to support the Carey Heavner Foundation. The Carey Heavner Foundation provides financial assistance to families that has a child battling Cancer and was established by Mike And Kim Heavner shortly after Careys courageous fight against Cancer in 2010. Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Education Conference
   The Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Education Conference - Sept. 15 - Flint Hill Baptist Church, Shelby, NC. This full day conference will feature a variety of speakers on topics related to caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. Community resources will be available to answer questions and offer information. Target audience includes family caregivers, professional caregiver, faith community members and anyone interested in learning more about the disease. Cost $10 per person.
