South Mountains State Park Programs


8/14 – “Bats” – Saturday – Are bats blind? Do they fly into your hair? Do they turn into vampires? Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn some Bat facts and have an opportunity to view some Bats.


8/14 – “The Roles and Responsibilities of a NC State Park Ranger” – What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm.


  8/15, 8/22, 8/29 – “Tree ID Hike” – Sunday – 11 am. Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area


8/15 – “Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild” – Sunday – How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center.


8/21 – “The 10 Essentials” – Saturday – What items should you always carry with you when hiking?  Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am to learn about the “10 Essentials”.   


“Creatures of the Night” – Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm to learn about some of our local nocturnal creatures. Note: This program will NOT have any live specimens.


8/22 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Sunday – 2 pm. Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home.  The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.


8/28 – “Birds of Prey” –  Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm and learn about some of the birds of prey found in the South Mountains. You will learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these animals, and find out why they are called birds of prey.


8/28 – “What’s in the Water?” – Saturday – 11 am. How many different kinds of critters live in the river?? Join a Park Ranger in the stream to turn over some rocks and learn more about what you might find there. Come prepared to get wet!!  Meet at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am.


8/29 – “Element of Disguise” – Sunday – 2 pm. Can you see me now? Kids, join a Park Ranger for a program on animal camouflage.  Learn how both predators and prey use the true art of camouflage for survival. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.

Sign-Ups for Cleveland County Pop Warner Warrior Football Team


    Registration is underway for the Cleveland County Pop Warner Warrior Football Team. Sign-ups will be ongoing, space permitting.  Registrations are being held at the Boys & Girls Club building at 412 West Sumter Street, directly behind Shelby Middle School in Shelby.    Any youth, ages 10 through 13, qualifying on the weight restrictions can play. Age cutoff is July 31. Players birthdates for ages 10-12 need to be between August 1, 1997 and July 31, 2000 and between August 1, 1996 and July 31, 1997 for age 13. Weight range for ages 10 to 12 are 85 to 135 pounds. For age 13 the weight range is 85 to 115 pounds. Registration is first-come first-served         Football players will need a physical exam before starting practices.  Practices will be held in the evenings at the Boys & Girls Club site.  Registration materials can be picked up at the Boys & Girls Club weekdays during our Summer Day Camp hours of 8 AM to 5:30 PM. There is a non-refundable $50 registration fee for the football program. This fee includes a mandatory membership in the Boys & Girls Club After-School Program for the 2010-2011 school year. A birth certificate with a raised seal is required for registration. All birth certificates will be kept on file for the duration of the season. Crossroads Rescue Mission 3rd Annual Bookbag Giveaway


This year Crossroads Rescue Mission will join the Cleveland Mall in distributing back to school supplies to needful children in our area. Each child who is present at the Cleveland Mall on Saturday, August 14th, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. will have his or her choice of bookbag color, and will then receive pencils, paper, crayons, notebooks, and more! There will also be other local businesses and organizations that are family and kid oriented to present opportunities, offers, and surprises for everyone. Last year’s event was a great success with 1000 bookbags distributed to help area children get a head start on learning. Come early to insure the best selection. Hot Dog Tailgate Party


    Communities In Schools of Cleveland County invites you to its annual... HOT DOG TAILGATE PARTY at the Cleveland County Jamboree August 20, at 5:30 p.m. at Shelby High School. It only costs $5 for chips, dessert, drink and of course, two hot dogs with all the fixin’s - that’s chili, slaw, cheese, relish, kraut, jalapenos, hot sauce, condiments...you just name it. The hot dogs will be grilled to perfection on the “Big Green Egg”, courtesy of Future Energy Company.

Care For Carey 5K Run/Walk


    The “Care For Carey 5K Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run, scheduled for Saturday, August 21st, is a fundraising event being held to support Carey Heavner, an 11 year old from Fallston, NC, diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer. Our goal is to defray, as much as possible, the tremendous costs associated with Carey’s extensive medical treatment at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. Race Time: 8:00 am (Race Day Registration Opens at 7:00 am) at Shelby City Park. All participants will receive: a glow in the dark wristband, refreshments, aid station and other goodies. Participants registered prior to Aug. 2 are guaranteed and event T-shirt. $20 pre-registration; after Aug. 16th $25. Lost Playwrights Meeting


    The Lost Playwrights of  Western  North  Carolina  will  meet to read and discuss works in progress on Saturday,  August 21st  from 3:00 - 5:00 PM, in the Kaplan Auditorium, Henderson County Public Library. Kings Mountain Historical Museum


    The Kings Mountain Historical Museum is pleased to announce the opening of What Did Our Ancestors Wear?, the exhibit will run will run through August 21, 2010.  Many examples of clothing, accessories, undergarments from the 18th to mid 20th century.  Featuring a “dress-up corner” for children to try on reproduction clothing and have their picture taken. Life Enrichment Center, Shelby


    Keeping the brain healthy to prevent dementia is program topic for Parkinson’s Support Group. “Food for Thought: How to Maintain Your Brain” will be the topic for the Parkinson’s Support Group meeting Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby. The emphasis will be on strategies to keep the brain healthy in order to prevent dementia. This program is open to the public and is free of charge. Life Enrichment is located at 103 T.R. 4th Annual Masonic Golf Tournament

Shelby City Park Football Sign-Ups


    The Football Sign-ups will be held Monday, August 2nd thru Friday, August 27th 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday, August 28th from 9 am to 1 pm. Ages are 5 & 6 (Flag Football), 7-9 years (Pee Wee League), and 10, 11, & 12 years (Midget League). All ages are as of Sept. 1st, 2010. Absolutely no 7th graders are allowed to participate in Football, regardless of age. The fees are $22.00 (if residence is inside the city limits of Shelby), and $37.00 (all others). Payment is due at time of sign-up! At time of registration a parent or guardian must be present. If you did not play in the league last year, you must bring a copy of your birth certificate. Both new and returning players must sigh-up to be eligible to play. All new players and returning players, moving up from one league to another, will enter the draft to be assigned a team. Hot August Nights Benefit Concert


    A Hot August Nights Benefit Concert, will be held in honor of Wesley Telsrow, a Bessemer City/Grover young man who needs a double lung transplant. The event is planned for Saturday August 28th at Kevin Millwood Park in Bessemer City. 21 year old Wesley is listed for a Lung Transplant at The University of Chapel Hill Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Funds are being raised to assist with his transplant-related expenses. Loaded Mule Band and Magician Chastian Criswell will be performing, food will be provided by Sunnyside Baptist Church, Inflatable’s for the children, provided by Off the Wall Entertainment, silent auction, and more. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes for a night of family fun. Admission is for donations only. Camp Call Masonic Lodge Annual BBQ
