Solid Rock Garden, Lawndale
Solid Rock Garden Work Evening, August 18, 2016, starting at 5:30pm. A community garden on the grounds of the Upper Cleveland Rescue Squad (1032 W Stage Coach Trail, Lawndale, NC 28090). People are invited to grow food for themselves & local food pantry. We are trying to take back the space from overgrown grass & weeds! The garden needs quite a bit of attention/love and all help is appreciated! Bring gardening tools and gloves, and tillers, water and snacks provided. All skill levels are welcome! Crossroads Rescue Mission Book Bag Giveaway
Crossroads Rescue Mission will be holding its annual Book Bag Giveaway at Bethel Baptist Church, 606 S. Dekalb St., Shelby, NC, on Saturday, August 20, 2016, from 10:00am - 1:00pm. This is a community wide event for needy children who will be returning to school soon.
South Mountains State Park, Connelly Springs
South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am. "Masked Bandits". Fact or Fiction: Do raccoons wash their food? Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome! Sunday, August 21, 2016 - "Animals of the South Mountains". Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.Saturday, August 27, 2016 - "Masked Bandits". Sunday, August 28, 2016 - "Bugs for Me". Frogs and toads have good eyesight, which they depend on to catch moving insects. This game will help participants learn how frogs and toads catch their prey. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
Cleveland House Assisted Living
Cleveland House Assisted Living, 950 Hardin Dr., Shelby, NC, will be hosting a block party for the city of shelby held on Saturday, August 27, 2016. There will be free hamburgers, hotdogs and ice cold refreshments with live entertainment (Brian McCarn). Please bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the bouncy house, dunk tank, corn hole, face painting and the best roasted turkey legs you have ever had! Dover Foundation YMCA
Fall group swim lessons will begin the first Tuesday in October! Join them for lessons at their temperature regulated indoor pool. The fee is $30 for members and $55 for non-members. This includes 6, 45 minute lessons! Swimming lasts a lifetime!
Depression Support Group
Depression support group meets every Tuesday at 6:30pm until 8:00pm in the Cleveland Memorial Library small conference room. Peer support group for anyone with mental illness who feels they want support from people who "have been there". Contact Jodi with questions at 704-484-8998.
