More Info: Broad River Genealogical Society Presents Mark Hughes: Mark will present a program based on his new book "Confederate Soldiers in the American Civil War" Mark Hughes uses historical photographs taken during the civil war to explain how Confederate soldiers lived and fought. Fellowship and refreshments served after presentation.

Saturday, September 7, 2:00 pm - Hug-A-Tree. Visitor Center. Join a park volunteer at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm to learn basic survival skills.
Sunday, September 8 &15, 2:00 pm - Fly Fishing 101. Visitor Center.
Get Hooked! Join a volunteer angler at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm for an introductory class on fly fishing.
Saturday, September 14, 11:00 am - Bears of South Mountains. Visitor Center. Join a ranger and learn about the black bears of the South Mountains and across NC.
Saturday, September 14, 2:00 pm - Intro to Backpacking. Visitor Center. Come by the visitor center and learn all about the basics of backpacking!
Sunday, September 22, 2:00 pm - Box Turtle Connection. Cicero Branch Parking Area. Join a ranger for a short hike along the River Trail and learn about North Carolina's state reptile, the eastern box turtle.
Saturday, September 28, 11:00 am - 17th Annual Nature Day Park-wide. Celebrate National Public Lands Day by learning and having fun! Join South Mountains State Park Rangers, Friends of South Mountains State Park and volunteers for lots of family-friendly, naturally wonderful exhibits and activities! This event is FREE. Burke County's trolley will be providing shuttle service from the Visitor Center to the main event area in the Jacob Fork Parking Area from 11-3. South Mountains Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will have food and drinks for purchase.
Sunday, September 29, 2:00 pm - Fishing at Clear Creek. Clear Creek Access. Go Fish! Drop in and join a volunteer angler at the Clear Creek access from 2-4pm for an introductory class on fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. NC Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply. All ages and all types of fishing rods are welcome. Class will meet at the Clear Creek access off Orchard Road, Morganton, NC 28655
