Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center
Council on Aging/Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC, will sponsor the following events:
“Bingo” - Each Monday Night (except holidays). Doors open at 5:30 (no admittance after 7:00pm). Jackpot - 60 People or more $500. 60 People or less $300. Public invited 12 years old and up.
“Blood Sugar Screening and Blood Pressure Screening” - Thursday, August 7, and Thursday, August 21, 8:00am - 10:00am at Council on Aging.
“Register for September Commodities” - August 12, 13, 14, 9:00am - 12:00 noon & 1:00pm - 4:00pm at Council on Aging/Senior Center, by phone or walk-ins. Call 704-482-3488. To register you must meet the following guidelines: Income eligibility as set by the NC Dept. of Agriculture and be 65 years of age or older. To pick-up your commodities in September at the Neal Senior Center you must have registered at the Senior Center.
“Covered Dish” - Friday, August 15, 11:30am, at Council on Aging. Bring your favorite dish and plan to join us for fun and fellowship.
“Dine Around” (Alston Bridges Barbecue), located at 620 Grover St., Shelby, NC, Thursday, August 28, 5:00pm. Please call the Senior Center to reserve seating by Tuesday, August 26.
Coming in September (Shelby Health Fair) - Friday, September 19, 8:00am - 11:00am, at COA/Neal Senior Center. Services include: Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Height and Weight, Wellness Education, Nurse Counseling, Carolina Healthcare Mobile Mammography and lots more will be offered. American Red Cross, Cleveland County
American Red Cross, Cleveland County, 1333 Fallston Rd., Shelby, NC will be having a Free Camp Ready Kids, Disaster Preparedness and Safety Camp, Saturday, August 9, 12:00-5:00. Ages 5-12. Activities Include: Build a Kit, Make a Plan, Make a Disaster Plan, Citizens CPR, Water Safety, Flu Prevention, Smoke House, Fire Prevention, and Safety Presentations. Hot Dogs, chips and cookies will be served at 2:00 during the day. In Partnership with Grover St. Fire Department/ American Red Cross of Gaston County.
South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, has the following Environmental Programs scheduled:
“NC State Ranger”. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm.
Saturday, August 9: “The Amazing World of Spiders”. Silk stronger than steel? Join Ranger Waltz at the Visitor Center at 11:00am for an informative presentation on spiders. Participants will have the opportunity to catch and examine spiders that are alive.
Saturday, August 9 & 16: “Animals of the South Mountains”. Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
Sunday, August 10 & Saturday, August 23: “Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild”. How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00pm in the Visitor Center.
Saturday, August 16: “Masked Bandits”. Fact or Fiction: Do raccoons wash their food? Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little “masked bandits” at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 11:00am to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome.
Sunday, August 17 & 24: “Knot Tying 101”. Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm.
Saturday, August 23: “The 10 Essentials”. What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”.
Saturday, August 30: “The 10 Essentials”. What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”.
Saturday, August 30: “Streamside Hike”. Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River.

Hospice Cleveland County Events
Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC will have the following events in July and August:
“Reflections” Support Group - Tuesdays: August 12, and 19, 5:30pm - 7:00pm, at Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one.
“Hospice Training Class” Monday, August 4 and Tuesday, August 5, 9:00am - 1:0pm or 5:30pm - 9:30pm. Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to our patients in Cleveland and Gaston Counties. This course is free and there is no obligation to volunteer. The classes will be held at Hospice Cleveland County. To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend both days at one of the times offered. Hospice Cleveland Copunty offers a number of opportunities for volunteer involvement, including direct contact with patients/families, assisting in the office, or at one of our inpatient/residential facilities. “Memory Bear Workshop” - Thursday, August 7, 9:00am - noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, at Kings Mountain Hospice House, 321 Kings Mountain Blvd., Kings Mountain, NC. Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care and Health Services

South Mountain Baptist Association Fun Day
The South Mountain Baptist Association, 3639 NC Hwy 18 Vale, NC, will be having a Free Family Fun Day August 16, 4:00-8:00pm. Everything will be free! We will give out 300 school supply bags ranging from kindergarten through high school at 5:30. We will also have a hot dog meal, inflatables, games, face painting, gospel music, pop corn, sno-cones, a clown will be giving out balloons, and will even be giving free hair cuts. Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC). The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County. This group is not intended for those who have personally survived a suicide attempt.
