Neighborhood Calendar Dec 12th Edition
Cleveland County Department of Social Services (LEIAP)
        The Cleveland County Department of Social Services administers the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) through our agency, December 2, 2013 - March 31, 2014 or until funds are exhausted. This proram provides eligible families a one-time vendor payment to help with their heating cost. Households must meet all of the following guidelines: Income Eligibility Limit - Enclosed, be responsible for separate heating bill, resources $2,200 or less, Include a U.S. citizen or an eligible alien. Applicants must bring the following in order to receive assistance: Verification of the household’s income and wage stubs for the month prior to application (prior two months if received monthly). Information about any checking/savings accounts or other resources. Name, date of birth, and social security number for every member of the household.
        Only households containing an elderly person 60 and above or a disabled adult in the home receiving SSI, SSA disability or 100% VA disbility AND services through Division of Aging and Adult Services are potentially eligible to beginning 12-2-2013. All other households can be potentially eligible beginning 2-3-14 thru 3-31-14 or until funds are exhausted. Approval is based on the availability of funds at the time of the disposition of the application.

Special entertainment by the Caroline Singers and Dancers, holiday crafts for everyone to enjoy and a special visit from Santa.
        Tuesday, December 17 - Classic Country Jewelry Show, 10:00am - 4:00pm. Handmade Jewelry, Earrings, Rings, Necklaces, Bracelets and Scarves. Only accept cash or checks.   
        Tuesday, December 17 - “Neal Senior Center Annual Christmas Feast”. Meal will be served at 11:30am. Program will begin at 12:00 noon - Special Music will be provided by New Hope Baptist Church Hand Bell Choir. Cost of meal will be $7.50 - Lunch will include: Turkey, Dressing & Gravy, Cranberry Sauce, Coleslaw, Green Beans, Yams, Bread, Dessert and Beverage. Greater Shelby Community Theatre
        Greater Shelby Community Theatre will present the comedy “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!)” on December 13-15 in the Keeter Auditorium on the campus of Cleveland Community College, S. Post Rd., Shelby. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30pm. Sunday performances are at 2:30pm.         Three actors, weary of performing the Christmas classics for the umpteenth time, decide to perform every Christmas story ever told.  A madcap holiday romp! The show stars Perry Anthony, Joseph Hurdt, and Chad Spurling. Rated PG, but PARENTS  BEWARE - important secrets regarding Santa are revealed and Santa believers may be disheartened.

Post-Polio Support Group, Cleveland County
        The Cleveland County, Post-Polio Support Group will hold the December meeting at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby on Monday, December 16, 6:00pm, located off Hwy 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd. just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. Each person attending should bring his/her own meal. Drinks will be provided. The program for December will be presented by accomplished violinist, Cindy Marshall. Ms. Marshall begain playing the violin at the age of eleven. She is the Concert Mistress  of The Symphony of Rutherford County, the violinist for Calvary Baptist Church, and has played with the NC Baptist Choir and Orchestra. Hospice, Cleveland County
        For the month of  December, Hospice Cleveland County will again order Holiday Meals for our in-home patients and families (40-50) who need them. The ordered meal will consist of: Ham, three (3) sides, rolls, tea and a pie (for 6-8 people). There are Hospice families that will not be able to have a meal, due to household bills, etc. Complete meals are approximately $50.00. Any donated amount will be appreciated. Also, let me know if you would like to prepare a Christmas home cooked meal or make a donation for our Nursing staff at Wendover or Kings Mountain. You may order a meal in honor or in memory of a love one.  A thank-you note/receipt will be sent for all donations. Rhema Outreach Ministry, Kings Mountain
        Rhema Outreach Ministry, 624 E. Kings Street, Kings Mountain, NC will be open to the Community for their Christmas Giveaway Tuesday, December 17, 5:00-7:00pm for yoru clothing, shoes, houseware items and toys. Donations needed are toys and food.
The Christian Women’s Club
        The Christian Women’s Club invites you and a friend to a “Gifts of Christmas Luncheon”, Thursday, December 19, 11:30am, at The Cleveland Country Club, 1360 E. Shelby American Legion Post 82
        Shelby American Legion Post 82 is sponsoring the annual high school oratorical contest. It is open to students in grades 9-12, including those home-schooled, who are citizens of the U.S. or lawful permanent residents. The local contest will be held Saturday, January 11, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The winner will advance to district competition and, if successful there, to state and national competition. Prize money and college scholarships are awarded. Post 82 plans to offer prizes to local winners. Cleveland County students who are interested should contact their high school or notify Post 82 contest chairperson Ludy Wilkie at ludy@shelby.net.
Singles Dinner Group, Shelby
        Singles 50 and over meet for dinner the first Friday of the month at Golden Coral, Shelby at 6:00 p.m. and the third Thursday at Fishermans Feast at 5:30pm. We participate in dancing and other monthly activities. We invite new members to join us. For more info, call 704 406 9166.
New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder
       The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses - depression and bipolar disorder. Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this group provides a safe and confidential place for those who have experienced the unique loss of suicide to find help, healing and hope. Our group is open to those who have lost a family member, friend or co-worker to suicide. Parents Without Partners, Shelby
       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts.         Kiwanis Club of Shelby is a group of professionals who are involved in the community and looking to change Cleveland County, one child at a time. This fundraising and project oriented club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby, NC; or the 2nd Thursday evening of every month at 5:30pm at Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant, 213 West Warren Street, Shelby, NC. National Alliance on Mental Illness Rutherford Cleveland
        Mental Illness Family Support Group will meet the third Tuesday of every month 6:30-8:00pm, 3rd Tuesday of the month, always on the 3rd Tuesday, at Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC. This FREE Support Group offers a safe and confidential place for family members who have individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses. The  share their experience, strength and hope and give help to others who are going through similar experiences as we have. Illnesses covered in the support group include: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, also mental disorders with a component of substance abuse, and other neurobiological brain disorders. Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health
        Will you spend the holidays with someone diagnosed with dementia? Tips will make the days easier. If someone you love has dementia, the holidays can be especially stressful not just for that person but for the whole family. Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Health Care has free tips available to make the holidays easier for everyone. Just drop by either center to pick up a packet that also includes gift suggestions for the person with dementia and for the caregiver.
