City Park Winter Hours & Holiday Events
        Winter Schedule (December, January, and February) is Friday and Saturday from 1-5:00 PM and 1:30-5:00 PM on Sunday. This is “Carrousel Only” in Winter except for special holiday hours if the weather permits for the Rotary Train. Train reopens with Spring Schedule in March.
        Christmas Party with Santa at the Carrousel on Saturday Dec. 18, 2-4 PM. Admission to the party is a donation of non-perishable food. Party with Santa, hot dogs, hot chocolate and rides included.

South Mountains State Park Programs
        12/18 – Saturday – “Christmas Wintergreen Hike” – 11 am. Join a Park Ranger for a walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail and learn about some of the plants that stay green all year long and plants that are used for traditional Christmas decorating. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area.
        12/18 – Saturday – “Bark, Buds & Twigs” –  2:00 pm. Winter tree and plant identification Hike. Learn about the plants around you and how they survived the winter. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area.
        12/19 – Sunday – “Bark, Buds & Twigs” –  2:00 pm. Winter tree and plant identification Hike. Learn about the plants around you and how they survived the winter. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area.
        12/26 – Sunday – “Skulls and Skins” – 2 pm - 3 pm. Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.

Child & Adult Care Food Program
        Cleveland Child Development Center announces the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Agriculture funded Child and Adult Care Food Program. The same meals will be available at no separate charge to enrolled participants. Children who are TANF recipients or who are members of food stamp or FDPIR households or are Head Start participants are automatically eligible to receive free meal benefits. Adult participants who are members of food stamp FDPIR households or who are SSI or Medicaid participants are automatically eligible to receive free benefits. Parents’ Nite Out
        The Pace Community Network is sponsoring a Parents’ Nite Out to allow you time to Christmas shop without your children. Someone will be available to watch and supervise your children on Fridays, December 17 and 24 from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church, located at 300 East Ross Grove Rd., Shelby. Council On Aging/Senior Center’s
Annual Christmas Feast
        The Council on Aginging/Senior Center will sponsor their Annual Christmas Feast on Friday, December 17, 2010, 12:00 p.m. The cost is $7.50 per person. Lunch will include: Turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans, yams, bread, dessert and beverage. Takeouts will be available. (All takeouts must be picked up by 11:00 on December 17). Christmas At The Harvest
        Faith Harvest Church will hold “Christmas At The Harvest”, an evening of celebration honoring the Greatest Gift Of All on Saturday, December 18th, 5:00 pm. Each attendee is asked to bring a donation of a new or gently used baby item to support the Pregnancy Resource Center, a local non-profit Christian ministry that assists women and their families with unplanned pregnancies free of charge. Woodbridge Lawnmower
Christmas Parade
        The Woodbridge Lawnmower Christmas Parade (17th Annual Charlie Gane Memorial Parade) will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2010, 2:00 p.m. The parade includes: kids, pets, grandparents, lawnmowers, bicycles and classical cars, a hayride and a Visit From Santa. Parade forms are available at top of Dunes Drive. Caroling (no talent necessary). A Festival of Cookies will be held at 107 Quail Hollow Drive, immediately after the parade. Volunteer cookie bakers are needed. All Woodbridge residents, families and guests are encouraged to participate.  This is the longest running Lawnmower Parade in North Carolina. Be a part of history. New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder
        Now people living with depression or bipolar disorder will have a new place to find hope, help and support. The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses – depression and bipolar disorder. The organization has over 400 independent local chapters that operate over 1000 self-help support groups around the United States. Cleveland County Arts Council
        12/27 – Saturday – Roots Music Film Night – 6:00 pm at the Don Gibson Theatre. The Cleveland County Arts Council & Destination Cleveland County are excited to offer three great films in one evening in the Don Gibson Theatre. These films have all been award winners at the Real to Real International Film Festival and have a roots music connection. Fallston Light Up The Town
        The Fallston Annual “Light Up the Town” will be held thru December 17th. Judges will be out between those days, looking for 5 catagories: Most Creative, Most Elegant, Most Traditional, Most Brightest and Kids Choice. Winners will receive $25 each. So Fallston get decorated.
Windjammers 22nd Annual Toy Run
        The Windjammers will hold their 22nd Annual Toy Run Ride For The Children of Cleveland County on December 19. Line up will be at Cleveland Mall. Pull out at 1:30 p.m. Breakfast will held at the clubhouse. Free BBQ will be available at the clubhouse on ride while it lasts. Help make a child’s Christmas happier. Give a toy or a donation.

Disaster Fundraiser
        The American Red Cross will sponsor a Disaster Fundraiser. Boston butts will be available for $35.00 each. Includes slaw and sauce. Uptown Shelby Luminaries / Court Square
        Join friends and family in Uptown Shelby on the 17th of December to add your own contribution to the glowing light on Court Square. For several years Uptown Shelby Association has organized the traditional display of lights to complement the Friday night horse-drawn carriage rides and other family fun in the Uptown district. A luminary donation of $5 adds a light to the display that can be made in honor of a friend or family member, or “You may choose to make a memorial donation that remembers a relative or friend who has passed on,” said Wade Nichols, Uptown Shelby Association’s Executive Director. “We will display the names of those honored and remembered, and the funds raised will be used to replenish the Christmas Lights around the Court Square.” If you wish to honor someone, send your contribution of $5 per luminary to Uptown Shelby Association by December 15th.
