Saturday, December 9, 16 & 30, 2017 - "Wintergreen Hike". Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am for this easy one mile walk. Also, Sunday, December 3, 10, 17 & 31, 2017, meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00pm.
Saturday, December 9, 16, 2017 - "Nature's Ornaments" - Want to make a clothespin reindeer or a tree cookie ornament for your Christmas tree? Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to make these fun crafts.
Saturday, December 9, 2017 - "Backpacking 101". Join Jeff Newton for an introductory class on backpacking. Participants will learn about proper clothing, trail cooking, basic first-aid and how to set up a tent. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm.
Sunday, December 10 & 17, 2017 - "Fly Fishing 101". Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
Saturday, December 23, 2017 - "Wilderness Survival 101". This will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton. Free and open to the public. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm.

Town of Polkville 5K
The First Annual Polkville 5K will be held Saturday, December 9, 2017. Registration begins at 7:00am and race begins at 9:00am. Polkville Volunteer Fire Department, 4315 Polkville Road, Polkville, NC. $20 Early bird Online Registration. Visit: https://runsignup.com and scroll down and search: Polk"5K"ville. Early bird registration until September 15, 2017. After that price increases. Additional $2.50 processing fee. All proceeds to help raise money for the Town's 2018 4th of July Celebration! Kings Mountain Historical Museum
Kings Mountain Historical Museum, 100 East Mountain St., Kings Mountain, NC, invites you to join them to see Santa Saturday, December 9, 2017, from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Santa Claus will be at the Museum during the Toys, Games & Trains exhibit to visit with the little ones. Mrs. Claus will also do a special reading of the classic 1823 children's story "The Night Before Christmas" Admission is free.

Shelby Lions Club Commodities Distribution
The Shelby Lions Club will be distributing USDA Commodities on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at the Cleveland County Fair Ground. Those who wish to come on that day and fill out an application will only need to give your home address and must live in Cleveland County. If a person is unable to come in person, they may send a note stating the number in the family, their address and their whole family income, signed by them. The distribution is based on the number in the family and the income of the household.
DASG - Depression Anxiety Support Group

Salvation Army - Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery, a Christian program for people affected by alcoholism and drug addiction, is now available at The Salvation Army church in Shelby, NC. Anyone is welcome. They will meet on Wednesday at 7:00pm in the fellowship room at The Salvation Army, 305 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC. Refreshments served. The parking lot is behind the church. Participants should use the red door near the fellowship hall. John Baker is the founder of Celebrate Recovery, a ministry born more than 20 years ago out of Saddleback Church, pastored by Rick Warren, author of The Purpose-Driven Life. It is now being used in thousands of churches nationwide. Over two and half million individuals have completed the program. Baker is also a nationally known speaker and the author of The Celebrate Recovery curriculum. Are You 55 Years Old or Older and Looking for Part-Time Employment?
If you are currently unemployed and seeking employment, you may qualify to participate in a part-time temporary employment-training program for older workers. You must be 55 years old or older, live in North Carolina, and meet the program's income guidelines. Participants earn $7.25 an hour and work 20 hours per week.
