Neighborhood Calendar December 6th Edition
    Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. We also have a new class that meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10:00am to 3:00pm to provide one to one instruction to beginning quilters. The Shelby Lions Club
        The  Shelby  Lions  Club  has  made  changes  in  its  meeting  schedule. The  first  Tuesday  of  each  month  will  be  a  business  meeting held  at  the  Lions  Senior  Village  on  North  Morgan  Street. The  regular  membership  meeting  will  be  held  on  the  second  Tuesday of  each  month  at  Deerbrook  Country  Club. Shelby Lions are making this change to encourage local residents to take a look at the club and consider getting involved.  Shelby Lions are active in the community and offer fellowship and fun to members.  The meeting schedule change will help us to keep our membership dues low, reduce the monthly meeting time, and still offer the fellowship and community involvement that many are looking for. Parkinson Support Group, Neal Sr. Center
        A Parkinson Support Group Meeting will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Neal Sr. Center, 100 Harris Dr., Shelby. Sgl. Doug Murphy 704-487-8822.
NAMI Rutherford Cleveland
        The National Alliance on Mental Illness/Rutherford Cleveland hosts a Mental Illness Family Support Group, always on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 6:30-8:00pm., Cleveland County Red Cross Building, 1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC. This Family Support Group is specifically geared to the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, adult children and close relatives of persons suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses. The illnesses covered are: Depression (unipolar), Manic Depression (bipolar), Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and other neurobiological brain disorders.  These meetings are confidential and a safe place to talk with other families members going through the same experiences.  We Are Families Helping Families! Mental Health Association Support Groups
        Family-to-Family Caregiver Support Group, meets every third Tuesday of the month, 6:30 - 8:00pm at the Cleveland County Red Cross (1333 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150) Co-sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County and NAMI Rutherford/Cleveland, this support group offers a safe space for close relatives of persons suffering from a severe mental illness to share their experience with others in a similar situation.         Survivors of Suicide Support Group will meet Tuesday, December 18 from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library. Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this support group offers support to those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Cleveland County Memorial Library, Shelby
        THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE…Spend your lunch hour at the library and feed your mind! The Main Library in Shelby, Cleveland County Memorial Library, 104 Howie Drive, Shelby, is continuing the series of programs for our community that will give folks a chance to spend their lunch hour being entertained. The idea is to bring your bag lunch and the library will provide water, tea and a great program. The programs will be held in the Plaster Meeting Room and you can “come through the garden gate” entrance. The programs will be on the first and third Thursdays of every month from 12:15 to 12:45 and will feature stories, music and educational topics.
Kiwanis Club, Shelby
        Kiwanis Club of Shelby meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby. 704-482-4419. Membership dues are $110 per quarter which includes meals and dues.
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Shelby
        DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder. DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support. The support group meets every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church in Shelby.  COA/Neal Senior Center, Shelby
        The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, will have “Bingo” each Monday night (except holidays). Doors open at 5:30 (no admittance after 7:00pm). Jackpot up to $500. Public invited 12 years old and up.
Lost Playwrights of Western North Carolina
         Lost Playwrights will meet Saturday, December 1, from 2:00pm  to 4:00pm at the official residence of Princess Diana Lenska, 450 West Main Street, Forest City North Carolina. This is a yellow brick  house next to First Presbyterian Church. Parking is in the rear. All  persons interested in any aspect of theatre or creative writing are  cordially invited to attend.
Hospice Cleveland County Upcoming Events
        Sponsor A Holiday Dinner. This year Hospice Cleveland County will again order Holiday dinners for our patients and families who need them. The complete dinners include an 8-10 lb. Ham or Turkey, 3 sides, home style rolls and dessert and will serve 6 - 8 people. As we plan our own holiday celebrations, we are reminded that many of our Hospice families will be unable to celebrate as they may have in the past. Often, there is simply not enough money, energy, and/or desire to get a holiday meal prepared. Complete dinners are approximately $50 each. Any contribution will be appreciated. If you would like to help sponsor a Holiday dinner for a patient and their family, please mail your donation to: Hospice Cleveland County, C/O Holiday Dinner, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, NC 28150.         Tuesdays: December 11, 18, “Coping with the Holidays” Sharing Group will meet at 11:30pm - 1:00pm, at The Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building. This grief sharing group is at no cost and is open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Please RSVP to ext. 166 if you plan to attend.

        The Salvation Army Christmas Distribution Center for Cleveland County will be at 508 W. Dixon Blvd. in Shelby, in the Huxley Village Shopping Center.
Cherryville Little Theatre
        The Cherryville Little Theatre will be presenting “Junie B Jones, First Grader, Jingle Bells, Batman Smells”. The production will take place on Friday and Saturday, December 7 & 8, 7:00pm and on Sunday, December 9, 3:00pm. Admission cost is $5 along with a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the local Cherryville Food Bank. The cast, tech and board of “Junie B Jones” are happy to announce that all the profits from this event will be donated to The Cherryville Area Ministry.
Achieve Learning Center, Shelby
        Achieve Learning Center, 1635-2 E. Dixon Blvd., Next to 74 Tools, Shelby, will be having a Yard and Bake Sale, Fri. & Sat., December 7 & 8, 8:00am to 3:00pm. Yard sale will be in parking lot and inside Believe in Abilities Store. Proceeds from the yard/bake sale will benefit adults with developmental disabilities.
        Also Christmas Gift Wrapping will be offered for donations benefit First in Families, December 1 thru December 20, at Achieve Learning Center, 1635-2 E. Dixon Blvd., Shelby.
Santa at the Carrousel, Shelby
Shelby Parks and Recreation Department in Partnership with Cleveland County Memorial Library Cleveland County Partnership for  Children are hosting “Santa at the Carrousel”, Saturday, December 8, 9:30am - 12:30pm, photos by David Grose*; 1:00pm - 6:00pm: Party with Santa at the Carrousel! Free family fun! Come experience Cleveland County’s very own special Holiday Story Time, Holiday Art Tattoos, Hot Chocolate and Holiday Fare will also be provided.         A Christmas Home Tour will be held on Saturday, December 8, 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Van departs 5:00 P.M. Town of Fallston’s Upcoming Events

        Fallston’s “Light Up the Town” will be the week on December 17 thru 21. There are 5 catorgories: Kids’ Choice, Most Elegant, Most Brightest, Most Traditional, and Most Creative. Winners will receive $25. This includes Fallston City Limits and a 2 mile radius outside the city limits. So get busy and decorate your ‘home for the holidays’.
Graham Elementary School Decorates Shelby City Park Christmas Tree
        Community Day Celebrating Graham Elementary, Tuesday, December 11, 12:00-2:00. Graham Elementary School 3rd & 4th Granders will decorate the Shelby City Park Christmas Tree. Friends of the Park providing hotdogs and treat bags along with riding the carrousel. Cleveland Memorial Library will have a station with a fun activity. South Mountains State Park, Connelly Springs
        South Mountains State Park Environmental Programs:
        Saturday, December 8, 15, 22, 11:00am & December 23 & 30, 2:00pm - “Christmas Wintergreen Hike”: Join a Park Ranger for a walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail and learn about some of the plants that stay green all year long and plants that are used for traditional Christmas decorating. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am & 2:00 pm.
        Sunday, December 9 & 16 - “Nature’s Ornaments”: Hey kids, want to make a pinecone Christmas tree or a clothespin reindeer? If so, stop by the Visitor Center between 2:00-4:00pm to make these fun Christmas tree ornaments and more.
        Saturday, December 22, 2:00-3:00 - “Skulls and Skins”: Look for a Park Ranger and his interesting display of skulls and skins at the Visitor Center. Drop by and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
        December 29, 11:00am - “Bats”: Are bats blind?  Do they fly into your hair? Do they turn into vampires? Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm to learn some bat facts and have an opportunity to view some Bats.
        South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.
Burns Middle PTO Hosts Pro Wrestling
        Pro Wrestling N.M.C.W. and Burns Middle PTO presents “Clash Before Christmas”, Friday, December 14, 8:00pm bell time, at Burns Middle School. All proceeds go to BMS PTO. Tickets: $5 in advance, $8 at the door. Featuring: Coach Scruggs AKA The American G.I.,  Jay Batista, Former WWE Tag-Team Champion SIR MO, Shane Austin, Tim Hunter, plus other N.M.C.W. stars.
Kings Mountain Historical Museum
        Kings Mountain Historical Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00am - 4:00pm, and Sunday, 1:00pm - 4:00pm. The cost of admission is free, however donations are appreciated. All donations go towards supporting the museum’s mission of informing the public of the history of the City of Kings Mountain and surrounding areas by preserving and exhibiting the 19th and early 20th century collection. Visit the Kings Mountain Historical Museum this holiday season for the following events: 
        Santa and helpers will be visiting KMHM from 1:00pm - 3:00pm on Saturday, December 15. Stop by with your list, and check out the Museum’s gift shop for your gift giving needs. Old Salem Cookies and Cheese Stars are back and will be available at the Museum starting Saturday, November 17, 2012.
