New Support Group for Depression And Bipolar Disorder
Now people living with depression or bipolar disorder will have a new place to find hope, help and support. The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses – depression and bipolar disorder. The organization has over 400 independent local chapters that operate over 1000 self-help support groups around the United States. Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Room 319, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. Members also meet the third Wed. of each month 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to work on our community projects.

MOMS CLUB of SHELBY-We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 10-11 AM at Christ Covenant Church in Shelby. Here we plan our play dates, moms night out, and discuss other business matters for the month. Our members are stay at home moms or moms who work part time that live in the local area. City Park Winter Hours
Winter Schedule for February is Friday and Saturday from 1-5:00 PM and 1:30-5:00 PM on Sunday. This is “Carrousel Only” in Winter except for special holiday hours if the weather permits for the Rotary Train. Train reopens with Spring Schedule in March.
Journey - Partnership For End of Life Issues
Journey- Partnership for End of Life Issues will be having a program Thursday, Feb., 10 from 12 Noon until 1:00 pm, at the Patrick Senior Center, 909 East King Street, Kings Mountain and Thursday, Feb. 17th from 12 Noon until 1:00pm at the Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby. The topic is “What is your Legacy? What do you want on your tombstone” with Linda Cabiness, Community Outreach Coordinator with Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Health Service.
Shelby Parks & Recreation 2011 Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Sign Ups
Shelby Parks & Recreation will hold their 2011 Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Sign-Ups for ages 6-14 from now through Friday, March 11. Sign-up times will be 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. All league ages are as of January 1, 2011: Ages 8 & under; 10 & under; 12 & under; 14 & under. At sign-up time, you must have a copy of your birth certificate and a parent or guardian present. Flapjack Fundraiser
Boy Sout Troop 105 will hold a Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser for summer camp on Sat., February 12th at the Applebee’s in Shelby. The Boy Scouts will be serving from 8:00 until 10:00am. Troop 105 Scouts are sponsored by Lafayette Street United Methodist Church in Shelby.
Upper Cleveland Baseball Sign-Ups
Upper Cleveland Baseball sign-ups will be held Sat., February 12th at Burns Middle School from 12 Noon until 4:00 pm. Groups are: Wee Ball (ages 3-4); T-Ball (ages 5-6); Rookie (ages 7-8); Minors (ages 9-10); Majors (ages 11-12); and Teens (ages 13-15). We are travel team friendly. The Shelby City Park and Rutherford County Senior Center is planning a trip to Barn Dinner Theater on February 15, 2011. Transportation is provided by Discovery Group Tours. Bus will leave at 9:30am from Rutherford County Senior Center, and leaves
Shelby City Park at 10:00 am, seating for lunch will be at 1:00pm with a 2:15 showtime. Located in Greensboro, NC, Barn Dinner will present “Band of Angels”, a country music sensation about the starts of the famous Ryman Auditorium, featuring a cast of characters
including Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Minnie Pearl, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Ernest Tubb, Marty Robbins and more. A great lunch buffet is included. Spring Excursions at the Carrousel & Train
Shelby City Park is offering six days in March for school groups to ride the Carrousel and/or the Rotary Train for free. No ticket or operator fee for groups who make a reservation during these days and times. The dates are March 8-10 and 22-24, the second and fourth weeks of March on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Call now to reserve a time that will work for you. You must reserve a group time one week in advance. Space is limited. This is to thank school and other groups for their patronage during the year. Schools, day cares or other groups may call the Shelby City Park Office at 704-484-6811 to reserve a time to come. For other dates other than our regular scheduled operating hours, you may set up a time to come and pay a $20.00 operating fee for each ride plus 50¢ per ride.
Cleveland County Preschool Screenings
Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screenings for the 2011-2012 preschool programs will be February 21, 22, 23,24 and 25. No makeup screenings will be offered. The screenings will be held at the Office of School Readiness, 124 South Post Road, Shelby, NC 28152 (Beside the Food Lion, across from CCC). Children who live in Cleveland County and who will be 4 years old by August 31, 2011. Greater Shelby Community Theatre
The Greater Shelby Community Theatre will present “HATS the Musical” at Keeter Auditorium in the Cleveland Community College campus. Gaston County Quiltmaker’s Club Quilt Show
The Gaston County Extension & Community Association (ECA) Quiltmaker’s Club is sponsoring their bi-annual Quilt Show, April 30, 2011 from 9:00am until 4pm. The event will be held at the Citizens Resource Center located at 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy. in Dallas, NC. Cost is $4.00; children 10 and under free. Parking is free.
