    Piecemakers Quilt Guild
 “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM - 12PM at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton, in room 319. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. Meetings include a business meeting, show and tell, and a program related to quilting. Survivors Of Suicide Support Group
   Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, the Survivors of Suicide Support Group offers a safe and confidential space for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.  The group is facilitated by peers who are also survivors of suicide.  Join our group to talk with others who are processing this unique loss.  The group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at the Cleveland County Memorial Library, 104 Howie Drive Shelby, NC 28150.  For more information contact the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, 704-481-8637, mha@clevelandcountymha.org or visit our website at  www.clevelandcountymha.org

South Mountains State Park
  Saturday, February 18 - “Wintergreen Hike”- Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long.  Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for this easy one mile walk.

Cherryville Little League Registration

   Cherryville Little League is hosting registration for its 2012 baseball season.  Dates are: February 18th from 10am-2pm; February 25th from 10am-2pm; February 26th from 2pm-4pm. Location: Cherryville Fire Department, Ages range from 4-16.  Please bring a copy of your birth certificate and proof of residence.  Cost is $40 per player and $60 for two players.  For more  information please contact Chad at 980-522-7489.
Burns Middle School UN/Dover YMCA Craft Fair
   Burns Middle School Model United Nations and the Dover YMCA will be hosting a Craft Fair on Sat., Feb. 18th at the Dover YMCA Gym on Hwy. 150 in Shelby, NC. Time is 9am until 1pm. They are currently looking for crafters/artisans/vendors to sell at this Craft Fair. Costs of tables are $25.00 with the proceeds from the sale of the tables going to scholarship Burns Middle School students to the state Middle School Model United Nations conference in April. If you need further information or would like to be a vendor at this event, please contact Wanda Fischbach at wfischbach@clevelandcountyschools.org or call Burns Middle School and leave a message for Wanda Fischbach and she will return your call. All money for tables is due by Feb. 14th. There is no admission fee for the Craft Fair.

ResCare Homecare COPD Presentation
   ResCare Homecare has partnered with Alicia Dorn MSN from the University of NC at Greensboro. She is a nursing instructor at Isothermal College. She will present an educational presentation at ResCare Homecare. She will be speaking about COPD, the effects of the disease and treatments. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, February 21 at 5:30 p.m. ResCare Homecare is located at 615 S. Dekalb St., Shelby, across from Bethel Baptist Church. Anyone in the community that is interested in learning about COPD is encouraged to attend this community event. Sunny View Elementary School

   A Poor Man’s Supper will be held on  Saturday, February 25,  5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sunny View Elementary School, 86 Sunny View School Rd., Mill Springs, NC 28756. The menu will consist of: pintos, cornbread, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, mac-n-cheese, dessert and drink. Donations only. All proceeds go to help fund mission trip to Russia.
Shelby City Park

    A Chance For Change Fun Day In The Park will be held at Shelby City Park, 850 W. Sumter St., Shelby on Saturday, February 18,  10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Lots of activites will be held: face painting, bouncy houses, korn hole game, fire truck & safety, blood pressure booth. Popcorn and hot dogs with all the trimmings will be served.  A Chance For Change is a community based non-profit program that offers under privileged youth the chance to have their very own Safe-Haven. They operate an After School Education Program, where each youth enrolled receives homework assistance and help to achieve academic success. The program provides each child with a snack upon entering the facility and the youth receives a full meal (dinner) in the evening. Once homework is completed the youth participate in a number of educational and recreational activities facilitated by the recreational counselors and program director. The staff is composed of a Masters Level Program Director, Recreational Counselors, Classroom Assistants, Van Drivers and food Service Staff.  There is a need for donations of money, food, volunteer work, hygienic needs, classroom supplies or any other donation. 704-487-5771 for more info.
Burns FFA 

    Burns FFA will hold a BBQ on Saturday, February 25th from 4-7pm in the Burns High School Cafeteria. Tickets are only $8: BBQ, Slaw, Beans, Chips, Dessert and Drink. You can purchase tickets in advance or onsite. Dine-in or Take-out Plates. Help them go to Africa this summer!
Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care

 What is palliative care? How can it help the person with dementia? Caregivers of persons with dementia are invited to a meeting to hear the advantages of palliative care for the person with dementia and their caregivers. The program will be held at Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care in Shelby Tuesday, Feb. 21,  at 5:30 p.m. It is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call 704.484.0405.
SPD Accepting Applications
For Citizens Police Academy

   The Shelby Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizen’s Police Academy to start March 1st. The group will meet each Thursday for eight weeks from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Shelby Utilities Operations Center located at 824 W. Grover Street in Shelby. This is an excellent opportunity for the community to get to meet many of the employees of the police department as well as how we operate on a daily basis. Requirements for the academy are: Must be 18 years of age. Must Live, work, or attend school in Shelby, North Carolina. No felony convictions. No misdemeanor convictions within the past three years. If interested, applications can be picked up at the following locations: Shelby Police Department located at 311 South Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC. Shelby City Park Lifeguard Training Course

   The Shelby City Park will hold a Lifeguard Training Course at the Shelby High School Pool. Fri., March 9- 3:30-5:30pm or other assigned time: Sat. March 10- 9am- 4pm/ Sun. March 11- 2pm-5pm; Tues. March 13 - 5:30-8:30pm; Thurs. March 15 - 5:30-8:30pm; Sat. March 17- 9am-2pm/ Sun. March 18- 2pm-5pm. Everyone needs to be at every class. Must be 15 years of age.  Cost:  $125.00/ Due after the pre-swim on Fri. March 9. Includes Red Cross Lifeguard Book and Rescue Mask. If renewing certification and have Rescue Mask cost $80.00. (Please note new lifeguard material as of Jan. 2012) If you want to purchase a book total cost:  $110.00. Lifeguard certification and CPR-PR are both good for  two years. Deadline:  Friday, February 24 to sign-up call or come by the park office (704-484-6811).  The pre-swim test (www.redcross.org) will be on Fri. March 9 starting at 3:30pm at SHS Pool or at other scheduled time when signing up for class.  Once you pass the pre-swim, class will begin on Sat. Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
 
   Cleveland County Schools will hold a Preschool Screening for the 2012-2013 preschool classes on March 19-23, 2012. (No make-up screening will be offered). Location: Office of School Readiness, 124 S. Post Rd., Shelby, NC 28152 (Beside the Food Lion, across from CCC). Cleveland County Elementary Honors Chorus
   Cleveland County Schools will present the Cleveland County Elementary Honors Chorus, featuring 125 select students from the following Schools: Bethware, Boiling Springs, Casar, East, Elizabeth, Fallston, Grover, Kings Mountain Intermediate, North, Marion Intermediate, Springmore, Township Three, Union, Washington, and West. Performance Date is Saturday, March 31 at Barnes Auditorium at Kings Mountain High School, at 6:30 pm. The event is directed by select music teachers of Cleveland County Schools. Come and enjoy this awesome musical experience.
Registration Open For Ms Walk

 The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has opened registration for this year’s walk in Shelby. Walk MS: Shelby is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, in Shelby City Park (850 W. Sumter Street). Walk MS, an annual fundraiser for more than 20 years, is an opportunity for the community to support the estimated 15,500 people living with multiple sclerosis in the Greater Carolinas Chapter area. Sixty percent of all the money raised will go to programs, services and advocacy for Greater Carolinas residents. The rest will support national research to find the cause and cure of MS.
