Rutherford-Cleveland NAMI Meeting
  The Rutherford-Cleveland chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will hold an educational forum on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Crawford Building at Rutherford Regional Hospital.The speaker will be Patricia Whitaker, LCSW psychotherapist with Centered and Balanced PLLC in Forest City. The presentation is entitled “Semantics: The Subliminal Power of Word Choices”. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
Cherryville Little Theatre
     The Cherryville Little Theatre presents the classic Southern comedy “Dearly Departed” on February 28th, March 1st, March 7th and 8th at 7:30pm and March 2nd at 3pm. General admission tickets are $8 for adults, and $6 for Seniors and Students. (This show is not recommended for young children.) Meet the Bible Belt Kin of Bud Turpin. They’ve got a funeral to plan and - between the feuds, marital flings, and Macaroni and Ham Loaf Surprise - it may escalate into a multiple-coffin memorial service. By the time the Turpins sort through the hangovers, money problems, and headstone engraving options, they’ve learned that coping with life’s losses can turn out to be drop-dead funny.Performances will be at 301 West Academy Street.         “Bird Walk”, Saturday, March 1, 8:30am. An easy walk to look and listen for birds at the river. Discover different types of birds and their habitats. Bring binoculars, if you have them.
        “Trees”, Sunday, March 16, 2:00pm. An easy walk along the beautiful banks of the Broad River. Trees look different without their distinctive leaves, learn how to identify trees from their bark and limbs before they get dressed for Spring.

Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
        Screening for the 2014-2015 preschool classes will be: March 10-14, 2014 (No make-up screening will be offered). Location: Office of School Readiness, 308 W. Marion Street Building B, Shelby, NC (location of old Shelby Middle School, small building near tennis courts. Parking is in back.) Who: Children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2014. Cleveland County Library
        Our Through the Garden Gate lunchtime series is shaping up for the new year. Georgiana Wright will present her stories or songs on March 20. On April 17 she’ll bring her jazzy renditions of some favorite musical numbers. On March 6 local wood carver, David Caldwell will share  slides and talk about his work which includes restoration carving of our City Park carousel, church altarpieces, organ and fine art carvings. On May 1 the library staff member, Joy Cushing will accompany vocalists who will perform a selection of Broadway tunes. Other programs are TBA.
        Through the Garden Gate happens every first and third Thursday from 12:15-12:45 in the Library Meeting Room. Iced tea and water are served and your bag lunch is welcome. Bring a friend and enjoy something a little special on your lunch hour.   
Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center
        Council on Aging/Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC will have the following events in February:
        “Bingo” - Each Monday night (except holidays), at the Senior Center. Doors open at 5:30 (no admittance after 7:00pm). Jackpot up to $500. Public invited 12 years and up.
   “Heart Health Month” - Thursday, February 27, 10:00am - 11:00am, at the Senior Center. April Leonard, R.N. with Healthy @ Home will provide tips and share important information about keeping your heart healthy in an effort to live longer and stronger. To register, please call 704-482-3488.

    Hospice Cleveland County Events
        Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC will be having the following events:
        “Memory Bear Workshop”. Participants will have the opportunity to make a teddy bear out of a loved one’s shirt or other article of clothing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. Please call one of our Grief Counselors at 704-487-4677 to reserve your space. Thursday, March 6, 9:00am - noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, at Kings Mountain Hospice House, 321 Kings Mountain Blvd., Kings Mountain, NC.
        “Reflections” Support Group. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. If you plan to attend one of our groups, please make every effect to attend all six sessions. Please call ext. 163 to register. Registration forms are available at HCC Administration Offices. Tuesdays: March 11, 18, 25 and April 1, 8, 15, 5:30pm - 7:00pm., at Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building.   
        “Hospice training Class” is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12-hour course is free and there is no obligation to volunteer.  To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at one of the times offered. Community Empowerment Awarness Event
        A Community Empowerment Awareness Event will be held on Saturday, March 22,  11:00 am-2pm. at Edward C. Steward Park, 500 Highland Ave., Spartanburg, SC. The entire event is free. Event guest sare: City and County Elected Officials, Spiritual Leaders, Law Enforcement, Small Smiles, Youth Mentors, Health Wellness, Safe Homes & Anointed Vision Domestic Violence Advocates, Substance Abuse Counselors, Kickboxing & much more. Event activities include: Music, dance, songs, bouncy house, face painting & more. FREE FOOD and 300 FREE BOXES of household products/paper towels, toilet tissue, personal hygiene, etc. These boxes will be given out on a first come first serve basis. We will also give out FREE baby diapers for all sizes. This event is for all cultures so join us for a day of empowerment, awareness and fun for the entire family! Special Olympics Cleveland County
        Special Olympics Cleveland County will hold its annual Spring Track and Field Day Saturday, April 12, 2014 on the campus of Shelby High School. Anyone interested in volunteering needs to call Kevin Roberts at 704-487-9941 by February 13. All volunteers must be 16 years old.
Parents Without Partners, Shelby
       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts. Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this group provides a safe and confidential place for those who have experienced the unique loss of suicide to find help, healing and hope. Our group is open to those who have lost a family member, friend or co-worker to suicide. Kiwanis Club, Shelby
        Kiwanis Club of Shelby is a group of professionals who are involved in the community and looking to change Cleveland County, one child at a time. This fundraising and project oriented club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby, NC; or the 2nd Thursday evening of every month at 5:30pm at Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant, 213 West Warren Street, Shelby, NC. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting, visitors and new members are always welcome. Cleveland County Department of Social Services
   The Cleveland County Department of Social Services announces the availability of funds for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). This program provides a one-time vendor payment to eligible households to assist with the rising costs of heating. The funding is limited but at this time there is still funding available. The household must meeting income guidelines, be responsible for heating bill, include a U.S. citizen or an eligible alien, and have resources less then $2,200. The program will run through March 31, 2014 or until funding is exhausted, whichever comes first. The agency is open Monday-Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm. We are taking applications on a first come first serve basis. Please be prepared for a possibly lengthy wait.
