    Piecemakers Quilt Guild
 “Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM - 12PM at the Lincoln County Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen Street, Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting. Visitors and new members are welcome. Meetings include a business meeting, show and tell, and a program related to quilting. Survivors Of Suicide Support Group
   Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, the Survivors of Suicide Support Group offers a safe and confidential space for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.  The group is facilitated by peers who are also survivors of suicide.  Join our group to talk with others who are processing this unique loss.  The group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at the Cleveland County Memorial Library, 104 Howie Drive Shelby, NC 28150.  For more information contact the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, 704-481-8637, mha@clevelandcountymha.org or visit our website at  www.clevelandcountymha.org

South Mountains State Park
  Saturday, February 4 - “High Shoals Falls Extended Backcountry Hike” Join a Park Ranger for a 5.5 mile hike along the High Shoals Falls and Upper Falls Trails. Meet at the Jacob Fork parking lot at 10:00 am.  This moderate to strenuous walk will last approximately 3.0 hours.  Please bring lunch, water, and appropriate clothing and footwear.  Contact the park office for more information and to pre-register for this hike.
  Saturday, February 4 -“Where Am I?  How to Use a Map and Compass”     Join a Park Ranger to learn the fundamentals of map reading, identification of land features, and compass use.  Bring a compass if you have it, and meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm.
  Sunday, February 5 - “Bats” Are bats blind?  Do they fly into your hair?  Do they turn into vampires?  Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn some Bat facts and have an opportunity to view some Bats.
   Saturday, February 11 - “Wintergreen Hike” - Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long.  Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for this easy one mile walk.

 Hospice Cleveland County

  Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby will sponsor a “Reflections” Sharing Group. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and is open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Please RSVP to ext. 166 if you plan to attend.  Mondays, Feb. 6 & 13, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. 
   Hearts For Hospice Fundraiser - For a $1 donation (or more) you can purchase a heart to display in your home, office, church, anywhere you wish. There is a place for you to put “In Honor/Memory” of a loved one and a line for “From”. Hearts can be purchased at the Hospice Administration Building or by calling 704-487-4677 ext. 163.
GSCT Presents Forever Plaid
  GSCT presents FOREVER PLAID Greater Shelby Community Theatre will present the very popular 50’s musical revue, Forever Plaid. Four male singers, killed in a car crash on the way to their concert, are miraculously revived to present beloved nostalgic 50’s songs and delightful patter in a posthumous concert. Performances are Feb. 3 and 4 at 7:30 pm and Feb. 5 at 2:30 pm at Keeter Auditorium, CCC. Tickets are $12/adults, $10/seniors, students. Free Course Offers Help For Families
Of Mentally Ill
  A spouse is in and out of mental hospitals  suffering from  Schizophrenia.  A grown child returns  home to live with his/her parents because manic depression does not allow him to function in society.  A young daughter is diagnosed as suffering with major depression. Where do families turn when they are faced with the problems that come when dealing with a close family member suffering with a mental illness on a daily basis? The National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI Rutherford-Cleveland is offering a FREE 12-week family education course. These (2½ hour) classes are once a week and begin on Monday, February 6th, 2012 from 6:00–8:30 pm at The United Way of   Rutherford County, 668 Withrow Road, Forest City, NC.   Persons who will benefit most are the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings and adult children and friends of someone they love who is suffering with one or  more of these illnesses: Depression (unipolar); Bipolar (manic depression); Schizophrenia; Schizoaffective disorder; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD);  Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD);  Co-occurring Brain Disorder and Addictive Disorders.  Over 250,000 people have taken this course in the United States, Canada, Italy and Mexico. Cherryville Little League Registration
   Cherryville Little League is hosting registration for its 2012 baseball season.  Dates are: February 11th from 10am-2pm; February 18th from 10am-2pm; February 25th from 10am-2pm; February 26th from 2pm-4pm. Grover Rescue Squad Spaghetti Fundraiser

SPD Accepting Applications For Citizens
 Police Academy

   The Shelby Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizen’s Police Academy to start March 1st. The group will meet each Thursday for eight weeks from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Shelby Utilities Operations Center located at 824 W. Grover Street in Shelby. This is an excellent opportunity for the community to get to meet many of the employees of the police department as well as how we operate on a daily basis. Requirements for the academy are: Must be 18 years of age. Must Live, work, or attend school in Shelby, North Carolina. No felony convictions. No misdemeanor convictions within the past three years. If interested, applications can be picked up at the following locations: Shelby Police Department located at 311 South Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC. Shelby City Park Lifeguard Training Course

   The Shelby City Park will hold a Lifeguard Training Course at the Shelby High School Pool. Fri., March 9- 3:30-5:30pm or other assigned time: Sat. March 10- 9am- 4pm/ Sun. March 11- 2pm-5pm; Tues. March 13- 5:30-8:30pm; Thurs. March 15- 5:30-8:30pm;Sat. March 17- 9am-2pm/ Sun. March 18- 2pm-5pm. Everyone needs to be at every class. Must be 15 years of age.  Cost:  $125.00/ Due after the pre-swim on Fri. March 9. Includes Red Cross Lifeguard Book and Rescue Mask. If renewing certification and have Rescue Mask cost $80.00. (Please note new lifeguard material as of Jan. 2012) If you want to purchase a book total cost:  $110.00. Lifeguard certification and CPR-PR are both good for  two years. Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
 
   Cleveland County Schools will hold a Preschool Screening for the 2012-2013 preschool classes on March 19-23, 2012. (No make-up screening will be offered). Location: Office of School Readiness, 124 S. Post Rd., Shelby, NC 28152 (Beside the Food Lion, across from CCC). Cleveland County Elementary Honors Chorus
   Cleveland County Schools will present the Cleveland County Elementary Honors Chorus, featuring 125 select students from the following Schools: Bethware, Boiling Springs, Casar, East, Elizabeth, Fallston, Grover, Kings Mountain Intermediate, North, Marion Intermediate, Springmore, Township Three, Union, Washington, and West. Performance Date is Saturday, March 31 at Barnes Auditorium at Kings Mountain High School, at 6:30 pm. The event is directed by select music teachers of Cleveland County Schools. Come and enjoy this awesome musical experience.
Registration Open For Ms Walk

 The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has opened registration for this year’s walk in Shelby. Walk MS: Shelby is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, in Shelby City Park (850 W. Sumter Street). Walk MS, an annual fundraiser for more than 20 years, is an opportunity for the community to support the estimated 15,500 people living with multiple sclerosis in the Greater Carolinas Chapter area. Sixty percent of all the money raised will go to programs, services and advocacy for Greater Carolinas residents. The rest will support national research to find the cause and cure of MS. Shelby Lions Club To Sponsor Golf Event At Deer Brook Golf Club
   Shelby  Lions  will  host a Golf Event at Deer Brook Golf Club  Monday, May 7th.   Registration  will  be  at  9:00am; tee off at 9:30am. The  event is a  fundraiser for Cleveland County Hearing & Sight Conservation needs  (eye exams, eyeglasses, etc.) and for the Lions Shelby High School Scholarship Award. This will be a 4-person Captain’s Choice tournament with cash and other prizes to be awarded.  1st place prize will be $300 for the winning team. Teams can pick up sign-up sheets at Deer Brook Golf Club   or  First National Bank South Branch, Cost for the event is only $60 per player ($240 per team) and includes green fees / cart, lunch, sleeve of golf balls, and prizes.
