Saturday, January 14, 21, 28, 2017 - "Wintergreen Hike". Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm for this easy one mile walk. Sunday, January 15, 22 & 29, 2017 - "Skulls & Skins". Drop by between 2-3:00 pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
Sunday, January 15, 22 & 29, 2017 - "Introduction to Fly Tying". Get Hooked! Join anglers Jeff Newton and Bob Tupper at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Jeff and Bob are instructors with Project Healing Waters and are members of Trout Unlimited. All class materials will be provided free. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
Saturday, January 21, 2017 - "Wilderness Survival 101". Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. They welcome the community to join them for their monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.

The Town of Waco will hold their monthly meeting on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited to attend.
The Foothills Post-Polio Support Group
The Foothills Post- Polio Support Group, formerly called the Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group, will hold it's January meeting at "The Depot Restaurant" in Lattimore, NC on Monday, January 16, 2017. The address is 202 Price Street in downtown Lattimore, NC. Be at the Depot Restaurant by 12:30. Everyone is invited. This is a dutch treat as everyone is responsible for paying for their own meal. They will discuss this past year and search for ways to reach more people who have had polio before and are still suffering the after affects of this disease. MLK Celebration at Cleveland Community College
CCC's Student Government Association and Minority Male Mentoring program invite the community to a celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Mildred H. Keeter Auditorium at CCC. Keynote speaker Reverend Christopher D. Vaughn will present a program titled We Won't Forget: Reflections on Race and Faith After the Tragedy of Charleston Nine. Rev. Vaughn's best friend, Senator Clementa C. Pinckney, was the senior pastor at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC and was one of the nine people killed in the mass shooting that took place during an evening Bible study at the church in June 2015.
Christopher Dale Vaughn is the son of Rosa and Edward Vaughn. He was born in Burlington, NC and moved to Green Sea, SC during his elementary childhood years and graduated from the public schools of Horry County. Vaughn attended Allen University, Columbia, SC where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. It was while at Allen University that Vaughn accepted his call into the ministry. After graduation he matriculated to The Interdenominational Theological Seminary, Atlanta, GA. Reverend Vaughn has served in the Ministry for 20 years. He is also employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina as a Digital Specialist. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., The South Carolina Football Officials Association and CIAA Football Officials. On June 17, 2015, tragedy struck Vaughn when his best friend, the honorable Senator Celmenta C. Pinckney of South Carolina was murdered along with eight other parishioners in a mass shooting hate crime at an evening bible study at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. Senator Pinckney was the senior pastor. Christopher Vaughn gave remarks at the funeral, featured in an article in TIME magazine, and has traveled the country having conversations on race and faith. Rev. Vaughn resides in Blythewood, SC with his wife, Sheila and their four children. Rev. Vaughn loves sharing the word of God in hopes of lives being changed and souls being saved.

Cleveland County Cooperative Extension and the Patrick Senior Center

If you are interested in learning more about eating well and shopping smart, then Better Choices, a Steps to Health program might be just what you're looking for. This free, eight-workshop series reviews ways to improve your overall diet while saving money. You will have many opportunities to taste new foods and receive easy, low-cost recipes you can make at home. Cleveland County Cooperative Extension and the Patrick Senior Center will be offering Better Choices at the Patrick Center in Kings Mountain beginning with enrollment on January 19, 2017 9:30-10:30am, and the workshop sessions at the same time January 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 2, 9, and 16. Reflections Sharing Group - Thursdays: January 12, 19, 26, and February 2, 9, 16, 2017, 11:30am - 1:00pm, at the Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. If you plan to attend one of our groups, please make very effort to attend all six sessions. Memory Bear & Pillow Workshop - Tuesday, January 17, 2017, 9:00am - Noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building and Tuesday, February 21, 2017, 9:00am - Noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, Testa Family House. Participants will have the opportunity to make a teddy bear or pillow out of a loved one's shirt or other article of clothing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. Educational Series: "Cooking Matters" - Tuesday, January 24, 2017, 10:00am - 2:00pm, Cooperative Extension Office; Kitchen 1 (Enter through Food Lion parking lot). Please RSVP to ext. 114 by January 20, 2017, to reserve your space. Sometimes the person we miss most was the person who cared for us through cooking and food preparation. Learn the basics of these tasks from Nancy Abasiekong, Family & Consumer Sciences, and enjoy the "fruits of your labor" at the end of the class! Whether a refresher course or a new skill, all are welcome. Menu, ingredients, and instruction provided.
For a $1 donation (or more) you can purchase a heart to display in your home, office, church, or anywhere you wish. There is a place for you to put "In Honor/Memory" of a loved one and a line for "From". Hearts can be purchased at the Hospice Administration Building or by calling 704-751-3591. All donation due no later than March 10th, 2017.

The Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening for the 2017-2018 preschool classes will be March 20-24, 2017 (No make-up screening will be offered.) Location: Office of School Readiness, 308 W. Marion Street, Building B, Shelby, NC 28150. (Location of old Shelby Middle School, small building near tennis courts. Parking is in back). This is for children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2017. Shelby High School Club Miracle
Club Miracle from Shelby High School will be hosting a Military Extravaganza at Shelby High School on Sunday, April 9, 2017, from 2:00-5:00pm, and also will be hosting a Dedication Concert in the Malcolm Brown Auditorium at Shelby High School, from 6:00-9:00pm. This event is a dedication event to honor all of those who have served or is currently serving, we will honor all the branches of the Military.
