Shelby American Legion Post 82
        Shelby American Legion Post 82 is sponsoring the annual high school oratorical contest. It is open to students in grades 9-12, including those home-schooled, who are citizens of the U.S. or lawful permanent residents. The local contest will be held Saturday, January 11, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The winner will advance to district competition and, if successful there, to state and national competition. Prize money and college scholarships are awarded. Post 82 plans to offer prizes to local winners. Cleveland County students who are interested should contact their high school or notify Post 82 contest chairperson Ludy Wilkie at ludy@shelby.net.
The Broad River Genealogical Society, Kings Mtn
        The Broad River Genealogical Society is fortunate to have Steve Watts from the Schiele museum of Natural History of Gastonia speaking at 3:00pm on January 12, 2014 at the Neal Senior Center in Shelby.  Mr. Watts will speaking on the Indians that lived here before this area was settled by the Europeans. Mr. Watts directs the Aboriginal Studies and the Traditional Outdoors Skills Programs at the Museum since 1984. He offers a series of primitive technology and classic camping workshops for museum professionals, teachers, and archaeologists. His replicas of prehistoric tools and weapons are featured in museums throughout the US. Mr. Watts presents workshops and aboriginal skills demonstrations thought-out North America and Europe. Refreshments will be available and admission is always free. Please park at the Back of the Neal Center.
Gardner-Webb University
        Gardner-Webb Universities production of the 24 Hour Play Festivals will be January 24-25. Written, produced and directed by students, the 24 Hour Plays festivals begins on the 24th and will be performed on the 25th for audiences to see! Come and support the Theatre Arts Department!
North Shelby School
        Teddy Bear’s annual BBQ Chicken Dinner at North Shelby School on January 31, 2014 from 4:00pm until 7:30pm. All proceeds go to send graduating seniors to Myrtle Beach for a senior trip. Tickets are $10 includes 1/2 chicken with baked beans, slaw, roll and dessert. The meal is offered eat in or carry out. Singles Dinner Group, Shelby
        Singles 50 and over meet for dinner the first Friday of the month at Golden Coral, Shelby at 6:00 p.m. and the third Thursday at Fishermans Feast at 5:30pm. We participate in dancing and other monthly activities. We invite new members to join us. For more info, call 704 406 9166.
Kiwanis Club, Shelby
        Kiwanis Club of Shelby is a group of professionals who are involved in the community and looking to change Cleveland County, one child at a time. This fundraising and project oriented club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at noon at Deer Brook Restaurant, 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby, NC; or the 2nd Thursday evening of every month at 5:30pm at Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant, 213 West Warren Street, Shelby, NC. One evening social a month at area restaurants. Membership dues are $30 per quarter plus $60 per quarter if you attend lunch meetings. Parents Without Partners, Shelby
       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts.         The Foothills Marine Corps League 1164 in conjunction with Lilly Beans coffee shop in downtown Shelby offer Free Coffee to any Verified Veteran the first Monday of each month from 9:00 - 11:30.   Come and join in the conversation and fellowship!

New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder
       The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses - depression and bipolar disorder. Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, this group provides a safe and confidential place for those who have experienced the unique loss of suicide to find help, healing and hope. Our group is open to those who have lost a family member, friend or co-worker to suicide.         Relay for Life 2014 Meetings will be as follows: Executive Commitee Meetings - February 4, April 1, and May 6, at 6:00pm, at Landmark Baptist Church Gymnasium. County Team  Captain Meetings - January 14, Februry 11, March 11,  and April 8, at Landmark Baptist Church Gymnasium.
National Alliance on Mental Illness Rutherford Cleveland
        Mental Illness Family Support Group will meet the third Tuesday of every month 6:30-8:00pm, 3rd Tuesday of the month, always on the 3rd Tuesday, at Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC. This FREE Support Group offers a safe and confidential place for family members who have individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses. The  share their experience, strength and hope and give help to others who are going through similar experiences as we have. Illnesses covered in the support group include: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, also mental disorders with a component of substance abuse, and other neurobiological brain disorders. Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care & Health
        Will you spend the holidays with someone diagnosed with dementia? Tips will make the days easier. If someone you love has dementia, the holidays can be especially stressful not just for that person but for the whole family. Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Health Care has free tips available to make the holidays easier for everyone.
