Shine a Light on the Fight Against Cancer - During the Relay For Life Cermony, votive candles are lit inside of personalized bags to shine a light on the fight against cancer. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to share their grief and find hope. During the Luminaria Ceremony, candles and torches brighten the way for Relay For Life walkers through the night. In the soft glow of candlelight, we reflect on the courage and strength of all who are affected by cancer. Early Bird Opportunity: order torches by March meeting and have the matching picture on the ten bags that come with the torch.

North Shelby School, 1205 Northside Drive, Shelby, NC will be holding their "Teddy Bear's North Shelby School Senior Beach Trip Annual Chicken Dinner", Friday, January 30, 2015. Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC, will be holding the following events for January:
"Reflections" Support Group - Wednesdays: February 4, 11, 18, 2015; 11:30am - 1:00pm. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. If you plan to attend one of our groups, please make every effort to attend all six sessions. Registration forms are available at HCC Administration Offices or by calling 704-487-4677.
"Memory Bear Workshop" - Thursday, January 29, 2015, 9:00am - Noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building and Tuesday, March 3, 2015, 9:00am - Noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, Kings Mountain Hospice House, 321 Kings Mountain Blvd., Kings Mountain, NC. Participants will have the opportunity to make a teddy bear out of a loved one's shirt or other article of clothing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. "Hospice Volunteer Training Class" is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12-hour course is free. To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at one of the times offered. Monday, March 16, Tuesday, March 17, and Thursday, March 19, 2015; 9:00am - 1:00pm or 5:30pm - 9:30pm, at the Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building, 323 E. Broad River Genealogical Society presents: Scott Syfert's "The First American Declaration of Independence" The Disputed History of the Mecklenburg Declaration of May 20, 1775, on Sunday, February 8, 2015, 3:00pm, at the Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC. Park and enter at the back. Scott Syfert is a corporate attorney at Moore & Van Allen in Charlotte, NC. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, the London School of Economics and the University of Virginia. He is an avid historian and also cofounder of the May 20th Society, a non-profit dedicated to commemorating the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

National Alliance on Mental Illness
National Alliance on Mental Illness Rutherford-Cleveland will offer a Familly-to-Family Education Program beginning Tuesday, February 17, 2015. NAMI Family-to-Family is a free 12-session education program for family caregivers of adults living with mental illness. It will be held on Tuesdays at 1:00 in the fellowship hall of New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale. The course provides a broad perspective that will help parents, spouses, siblings and adult children better understand and support loved ones living with mental illness, while taking care of their own needs. NAMI offers help and hope to families. People who take the course describe it as life-changing. It is taught by trained family caregivers who have loved ones living with mental illness. Gardner-Webb University's Theatre Arts Department and the School of Performing and Visual Arts is proud to present: The Music Man February 25 - February 28, 2015, 7:30pm nightly. March 1, 2015, 2:30pm. Dover Theatre, Gardner-Webb University Boiling Springs, NC. Five time Tony Award winning musical, The Music Man is set in 1912 in River City, Iowa where con man Harold Hill poses as a boys' band organizer and leader. He sells band instruments and uniforms to the naïve townsfolk, promising to train the members of the new band. But Harold is no musician and plans to skip town without giving any music lessons. Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
Screening for the 2015-2016 preschool classes will be: March 16-20, 2015 (no make-up screening will be offered). The location will be at Office of School Readiness, 308 W. Marion Street, Building B, Shelby, NC 28150 (location of old Shelby Middle School, small building near tennis courts. Parking is in back). This is for children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2015.
